Statesmen Edged By No. 15 UMass Boston

The No. 6/8 Hobart College ice hockey team was edged 2-1 by No. 15 UMass Boston in a New England Hockey Conference game played tonight in Boston, Mass. It was the Statesmen’s first loss in conference play.

Hobart is now 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the NEHC. The Beacons improve to 6-1-0 and 4-1-0 in conference action.

After a scoreless first period, UMass Boston scored twice in the second. Just 2:12 in, Bryan Carter gave the Beacons a 1-0 advantage off an assist from David MacGregor. At 8:59, Colin Larkin extended the UMass Boston lead to 2-0. Zack Bross earned an assist on the play.

Sophomore Will Harrison cut the Hobart deficit to one 3:53 into the third period after a pass from senior Vincent Russo. It was Harrison’s second goal this season. The Statesmen pulled their goaltender, sophomore Alexander Connal, with 1:12 remaining for the extra skater, but were unable to get the game-tying goal. Connal made a season-high 28 saves in 58:48 in goal for Hobart. Bailey MacBurnie stopped 34 shots in all 60 minutes for the Beacons.

Hobart finished with a 35-30 advantage in shots. The Statesmen went 0-for-4 on the power play and killed the lone UMass Boston power play.

Hobart is back in action tomorrow, Nov. 18, when it plays another NEHC game at Babson at 4 p.m.
