SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women’s hockey team grabbed its first win of the season defeating Penn State 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink.

Haley Shugart and Emily Erickson both netted their first career goals for the Dutchwomen. Erickson opened up the scoring in the game when she redirected a Caitlyn McClaren shot beating Penn State netminder Daniela Paniccia from right in front of the cage. Also, Rachel de Perio recorded her first of three assists on the night.

After going into the first intermission tied 1-1, the Dutchwomen struck quickly in the second as Haley Shugart tapped home a rebound off a shot from Abby Ellis. The goal came 1:28 into the second.

Shugart was not done in the period as she and de Perio got out on a 2-1 breakaway. De Perio feed Shugart right in front of the net and Shugart finished the point blank chance to put Union up 3-1 with eight minutes remaining in the second period.

With Union on the powerplay, Erickson sealed the 4-2 victory as she took the feed in the slot and beat Panniccia for her second of the game with six minutes remaining. De Perio and Arianna Kosakowski were both credited with assists.

This is Union’s first victory since December 12, 2014 and the first under head coach Josh Sciba.

The Dutchwomen are back on the ice next weekend as they travel to RIT for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday.
