Brockport Tops Cortland In OT

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Jeremy DeFazio (Oakville, ON/Georgetown Raiders) scored 3:37 into overtime to lead the Brockport men’s hockey team to a 4-3 win at Alumni Arena Friday night in SUNYAC action.

Junior Casie Garrison (Cortland/Philadelphia Revolution) netted a pair of goals for the Red Dragons (7-7-3, 1-5-2 SUNYAC), and senior Ryan Wagner (Buffalo/Aberdeen Wings) scored a goal. Sophomore Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) collected two assists, while senior Adam Diorio (Staten Island/NY Bobcats) and sophomores Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) and Drew Weigman (Gaithersburg, MD/Northern Cyclones) each recorded an assist. Weigman made 36 saves.

Senior Chase Nieuwendyk (Georgetown, ON/Trenton Golden Hawks) and juniors Robbie Hall (Schaumberg, IL/Trenton Golden Hawks) and Jake Taylor (Port Perry, ON/Lindsay Muskies) also scored for the Golden Eagles (8-7-2, 4-4-2), and five others collected one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Cole Burack (Rockwall, TX/New Hampshire Monarchs) registered 30 saves.

Hall gave Brockport the lead at 14:10 of the first period with a one timer deep in the slot. Garrison answered just 35 seconds later when he scored off a rebound of McCormick’s shot.

Garrison’s second goal of the night on a one-time blast from the slot gave Cortland a 2-1 lead at 3:42 of the second period. Taylor tied the game at 12:06 of the period when he capitalized on a Cortland turnover deep in its defensive zone.

The Golden Eagles retook the lead on Nieuwendyk’s team-high 12th goal of the season at 9:54 of the third period when he scored on a backhand in front. The Red Dragons forced overtime on Wagner’s goal at 16:18 as his shot eluded Burack.

In the extra period, Brockport outshot Cortland, 5-0, and ended the game on DeFazio’s goal in front after a Golden Eagle breakout of their defensive zone.
