William Smith Loses to Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass. – The William Smith College ice hockey team dropped a non-conference game to Division II Franklin Pierce 6-2 this evening. The Herons (2-9-1) twice overcame one goal leads but the Ravens used three second period goals to pull away in the last 30 minutes of the game.

Franklin Pierce (10-2-1) scored the game’s first goal at the 4:45 mark of the first period. Hailee Craig sent a low, slow moving, shot towards the goal that trickled past the goal line. Marissa Ketterman and Alex Brolsma collected assists on the play.

William Smith tied the game at one just 19 seconds later. First-year Rebecca Begley<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5535> notched her first collegiate goal firing a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net. Johanna Slicklen<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5550> and Rachel McKay<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5546> set up the goal.

Karsyn Baker scored at 16:44 of the first period to put the Ravens up 2-1 heading into the intermission. Baker and Alysha Raimo completed a give-and-go off a faceoff. Baker won the draw to Raimo who took the puck into the right-wing corner and sent a centering pass to Baker at the top of the crease.

Krista Federow<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5542> notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season at 7:52 of the second period to tie the game at 2.Kiley Fewster<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5543> drew the defender and slipped the puck to Federow who fired a shot from the slot into the back of the net.

Franklin Pierce notched the game’s final four goals including three in the final ten minutes of the second period. Craig and Baker each scored their second goals of the game to put the Ravens up 4-2. Broisma notched a power play goal to give Franklin Pierce a three goal lead heading into the second intermission. Franklin Pierce’s sixth goal came 2:44 into the third period. Hayley Arnold blasted a shot from the left point into the goal.

First-year Megan Messuri<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5547> started in goal for William Smith stopping 30 shots. Noelle White made 16 saves in the winning effort in net for the Ravens. Franklin Pierce converted on one of its four power play opportunities while the Herons failed to convert on their four power play chances.

William Smith and Franklin Pierce will face off again tomorrow, Jan. 10, at 3 p.m. at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
