REISTERSTOWN, Md. — A two-goal third-period deficit proved to be too much to overcome on Saturday evening, as the Elmira College men’s ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision on the road to Stevenson University. For the Mustangs, they avenged a loss against Elmira from a day ago to improve to 3-1-0, while the Soaring Eagles tasted defeat for the first time this season at 1-1-0.

Elmira owned a hefty 42-28 lead in shots on goal, but the key in tonight’s contest was special teams. The Soaring Eagles came up empty on six power-play chances, while both of Stevenson’s goals came with the extra skater, as the Mustangs converted on 2-of-5 power-place chances.

Eric Olson netted the game-opening goal for the Mustangs on the power play at 5:14 in the first period. Ryan Patrick and Austin Master were credited with assists. Stevenson outshot Elmira, 11-9, in the opening period.

EC outshot Stevenson in the second stanza, 15-9, and had a pair of power-play opportunities, but the Mustangs struck again with the extra skater to double their lead. At 16:42, Blake Coleman scored the eventual game-winning goal on assists from Houston Wilson and Carl Lydén.

Stevenson’s lead was cut in half just 20 seconds into the third period, when rookie Shawn Kennedy ’24 scored his first collegiate goal. Fellow first-year skaters Jordan Gonzalez ’24 and Daniel Dimon ’24 collected their first career assists on the tally.

Kennedy’s goal ignited the EC offense, which produced 18 shots in the third period alone. Elmira’s defense limited the Mustangs to just eight shots on goal in the final frame, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to find the back of the cage in the final 20 minutes, resulting in a 2-1 setback.

Chris Janzen ’21 suffered the first loss of his senior season. The Pelham, Ontario, native made 26 saves, 10 of which came in the opening period, in 58:56 of action. His counterpart from Stevenson, Ryan Kenny, totaled 41 stops, including a game-high 17 saves in the third period.
