David Jankowski and Cameron Buhl scored goals, and Emil Zetterquist made 25 saves, including 11 in the third period, to help the St. Lawrence University men’s hockey team win its second straight game and remain unbeaten on Thursday night at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, New York.

“Good battle tonight against a good young team,” said Charles W. Appleton II Head Men’s Hockey Coach Brent Brekke. “They didn’t give us much and it was tight from start to finish. Happy to see our guys rewarded for their effort.”

For the third straight game, the Saints gained a 1-0 lead in the first period, this time with their first power play goal of the season. Greg Lapointe took a hard wrist shot from the top of the right circle that was blocked in front, and Jankowski picked up the loose puck in the slot and fired it top shelf for his first of the season at the 17:15 mark. Lapointe extended his scoring streak to three games with the assist, and Nicholas Trela picked up his first collegiate point with the secondary assist.

Buhl gave the Saints a 2-0 lead halfway through the second period, skating across the ice from right to left through the slot and finding the right side of the net with a wrist shot from the slot. Tim Makowski picked up the primary assist, his third in as many games, with a long breakout pass into the neutral zone. Dylan Woolf also earned an assist on the play for his first point of the season.

Colgate’s best scoring chance in the first 40 minutes came on a breakaway by Griffin Lunn with less than two minutes to play in the second period, but Zetterquist, the reigning ECAC Hockey MAC Goaltending Goalie of the week, ate up Lunn’s shot to preserve the two-goal cushion.

But the Raiders came back with a strong third period, trimming the lead to one goal at the 6:57 mark. Arnaud Vachon skated behind the net and swept a low shot from a tough angle towards the net, and the puck found its way through Zetterquist’s pads and into the back of the net. Trevor Cosgrove and PJ Garrett picked up assists on the play.

Zetterquist shut down the Raiders for the rest of the game, however, making several big stops in the final minutes to preserve the win and move the Saints into sole possession of first place in the ECAC Hockey standings.

St. Lawrence was 1-for-5 on the power play and held Colgate scoreless in two power play opportunities.

Colgate, now 1-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in ECAC Hockey, outshot the Saints 26-22, including a 12-6 edge in the third period.

St. Lawrence, now 2-0-1 overall and in ECAC Hockey, will host the Raiders for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday at Appleton Arena. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
