Scibetta Breaks Career Marks As Herons Down Golden Wolves

GENEVA, N.Y.-The William Smith College ice hockey team cruised to a 9-1 victory over Alvernia in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. With the win, the Herons are now 8-7-0 overall and 4-2-0 in conference play.

Senior Gina Scibetta recorded a game-high four points on four assists as she eclipsed William Smith’s career record for assists (51) and points (91). First-years Julianna Gong and Mia LaPlante recorded a game-high two goals each. Five other players recorded multi-point games for the Herons. Junior Olivia Williams started in goal and made nine saves.

Lauren Czymek scored for the Golden Wolves (4-10-0, 0-6-0). Julia Beaven made 39 saves in the Alvernia goal.

William Smith took control of the game right from the opening whistle, finishing the first period with a 19-2 edge in shots on goal. The Herons opened the scoring at the 3:21 mark of the first period. Junior Jules Kennedy deked a defender and wristed a shot from the slot past Beaven for her fourth goal of the season. First-year Laura Hill and junior Julia Mings were credited with assists on the goal. Just over a minute later, junior Emily Martino scored what would prove to be the game winning goal. She fired a shot from the point off a defender and into the back of the net. LaPlante notched her first goal of the game at the 6:59 mark of the opening period. She collected a pass from Scibetta and one-timed a shot across the goal line. Gong added a shorthanded goal to give William Smith a 4-0 lead. She broke into the offensive zone on a breakaway, deked around Beaven and slipped a backhand shot into the net. Scibetta and junior Marykate Martino were credited with assists on the goal.

William Smith picked up right where it left off, adding a goal just over a minute into the second period. LaPlante flipped a loose puck past the goalie for her team leading eighth goal of the season. Scibetta and junior Lexi Nottke were credited with assists on the goal. Scibetta’s third assist of the game tied her with Krista Federow ’18 atop the Herons’ career list with 50 assists and 90 points. Just over a minute later, junior Alison Weiss notched her fourth goal of the season. She snapped a shot from the right faceoff circle into the lower left corner of the cage. Emily Martino was credited with an assist on the goal. Scibetta broke the assist and points record with just over five minutes remaining in the second period. She picked up a loose puck along the end boards and sent a pass to Nottke at the point. Nottke fired a shot along the ice, through traffic and into the net. Senior Kate Klimaszewski also notched an assist on the goal.

Gong and first-year Laura Hill added goals in the third period. Gong broke up a clearing attempt at the blue line and wristed a shot past Beaven for her third goal of the season. Hill banged home a rebound for her fourth goal of the season. Kennedy and Mings were credited with assists on the goal.

Czymek broke up William Smith’s shutout bid with her first collegiate goal. She poked a loose puck across the goal line. Abby Reisinger was credited with an assist on the power play goal.

William Smith finished the game with a 48-10 advantage in shots on goal. The Golden Wolves were 1-for-4 on the power play and the Herons were 0-for-2 with the extra skater.
