Skylar Podvey scored an extra attacker goal with one minute and 20 seconds remaining in the third period to force overtime and give the Saints a point in the ECAC Hockey standings in a 3-2 overtime loss to fifth-ranked Colgate on Friday night at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, New York.
Colgate’s Kalty Kaltounkova scored a 4-on-3 power play goal on a blast from the left circle at 2:46 of overtime to extend the Raiders’ winning streak to five straight games.
After Colgate took a 2-0 lead with just over four minutes to play in the first period on a pair of goals by Eleri MacKay in a span of just 1:54, Rachel Bjorgan scored her first career goal in the final minute of the frame to send the Saints to the locker room trailing by just one.
Lucy Morgan made 32 saves in regulation, including 14 in the third period, to keep St. Lawrence in striking range and set up Podvey’s late-game heroics.
“What a great effort by our team,” said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells ’92. “We get the point for the 60-minute tie and had two great chances to win it early in overtime. In three days, our team has grown much more than I ever anticipated. You can’t create the intensity of a game and the emotions that go with it. It felt good to all of us to get cranked up and play the way we did.
“Colgate does such a good job controlling the puck and making plays. There is a reason they only have one loss. Lucy kept us hanging around and Sky got us the goal with a great shot to tie it.”
Eleri MacKay gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead with six minutes to play in the first period, taking a pass from Delani MacKay right in front of the goal and going forehand-backhand before flipping it into the net.
Less than two minutes later, Eleri MacKay scored her second goal of the game — this time on the power play — off a feed from Sydney Bard at the right side of the net. MacKay took the pass and swept a shot around Morgan just inside the far post.
Bjorgan scored her first career goal with just 20.5 seconds to play in the first period, cutting around a defender and lifting a backhand past Colgate goaltender Kayle Osborne’s blocker side.
Podvey’s goal came on a hard wrist shot from the top of the left circle to the far post. Bjorgan and Anna Segedi earned assists on the play.
Taylor Lum had an opportunity to win the game for the Saints in the first minute of the overtime period, getting two bids on net on a breakaway, but Osborne was able to stop the rookie forward on both shots to prevent St. Lawrence from getting the win.
Morgan finished the game with 35 saves, while Osborne stopped 16 shots for the Raiders. St. Lawrence (0-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) was 1-for-6 on the power play, while Colgate (9-1-1, 5-0-0) was 2-for-4.
The two teams will square off again on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
