Colgate Loses First Game of Series

The Colgate men’s hockey team kicked off its 2013-14 season against Ferris State and the Bulldogs came out on top with a 7-4 win after a wild third period on Saturday night.

Colgate (0-1) had an early lead in the game with two first-period goals from Mike Borkowski and Andrew Black. It was a great start for Black who scored his first collegiate goal. Tyson Spink and Tylor Spink also scored in the season opener. Charlie Finn made his first start in a Colgate uniform and made 25 saves between the pipes.

Ferris State (1-0) was led by Garrett Thompson and Justin Buzzeo on the top line as each had a goal and two assists in the win. Jason Brinkley added a goal and an assist for two points. CJ Motte got the start and pushed aside 28 shots from the Raiders.

The Raiders got the early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first 7:38 of the game. Borkowski put the first goal of the season on the board with assists to Darcy Murphy and Joe Wilson. Black then tallied his first of his career with 12:22 left in the period. John Lidgett and Mike McCann were given assists on the play.

The second period was a different story with Ferris State scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 into the second intermission. Cory Lane started the comeback with the first Bulldog goal coming 3:53 into the frame. Scott Czarnowczan knotted the game at 2-2 with 6:31 left in the period with a power play goal with assists to Buzzeo and Thompson and then Jason Binkley gave the Bulldogs their first lead at 3-2 with 3:18 remaining in the period.

It didn’t take long for the Raiders to get back in the game to start a wild third period that featured six goals. Tyson Spink tied the game at 3-3 with a sniper shot from the right side after nice passing from linemates Kyle Baun and Tylor Spink. The goal came 58 seconds into the frame. Raiders regained the advantage with a power play goal from Tylor Spink, which came a minute later with another assist from Baun and also one from Borkowski.

The Bulldogs were not fazed, however, as they responded with another run. They scored four goals in the final 17 minutes to earn the 7-4 win. Thompson scored the gamewinner with 14:31 left in the game and the goal came on the power play.

The teams were even in the shot department with 32 apiece. Ferris State was 2-for-4 with the extra man, while the Raiders had one goal in three chances with the man advantage.

These two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. in the final game of the two-game series at Starr Rink.

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The No. 20 Niagara hockey team fell behind by a pair of goals in the second period and could not recover as the Clarkson Golden Knights earned a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Dwyer Arena.

The Golden Knights (2-0-0) kept Niagara (0-2-0) off the scoreboard in the second game of the weekend series to sweep the Purple Eagles in the first two games of the 2013-14 season.

“Considering the quick turnaround between the games I thought we played with a lot of jam and we were physical,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “There was no quit which is all you can ask of them. Our guys are judged on their work ethic and their commitment to detail.  If they work hard our coaching staff can accept that.”

Clarkson scored the game’s only two goals of the contest in the second frame to give itself a two-goal cushion heading into the final period.  The first goal came eight minutes into the period while on the man-advantage as Joe Zarbo took a snap shot at the top of the left circle that snuck in over the shoulder of Niagara goaltender Adrian Ignagni.

The second tally game six minutes later off the stick of defenseman Paul Geiger.  The sophomore faked a shot before stepping around an NU defender and roofing the puck top shelf.

Niagara finished the period with a powerplay opportunity, getting seven looks on net before heading into the second intermission trailing by two.

The third frame saw NU amp up the pressure, outshooting Clarkson 11-8, but the team could not find an answer to Clarkson goaltender Steve Perry.  The best opportunity for the Purps in the period came off the stick of Sam Alfieri while on powerplay.  Ryan Rashid slid across ice pass to the junior who was standing on the doorstep of the Clarkson net, but his one-timer met the sliding pad of Perry.  Moments later, Isaac Kohls whipped a shot from a bad angle towards net that slid across the blue paint.

Ignagni finished his first game as Purple Eagle with 27 saves.

“Ignagni was great in net for us,” added Burkholder.  “He handled the puck really well a couple times and got us some whistles when we needed them.  Like yesterday we were in the game because of our goaltenders which is a real positive that we will build on especially now that we’re getting into conference play.”

Niagara will take to the ice against Canisius on Saturday, Oct. 12 for the season’s first Atlantic Hockey contest in a rematch of the 2013 conference semifinal.  Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Dwyer Arena.

Don’t miss out as the cross-town rivalries clash so get your tickets now by calling the Niagara Ticket Office (located inside Dwyer Arena) at 716-286-TIXX, visit www.PurpleEagles.com/TIckets or by emailing [email protected].

NU Loses Opener to Clarkson

0

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara men’s hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Clarkson Golden Knights in the opening game of the 2013-14 season on Saturday evening at Dwyer Arena.

In a hard-hitting game that saw 60 minutes of penalty time between the two teams, the Golden Knights managed to get by the superb goaltending play of rookie Jackson Teichroeb in the final stages of the third frame to halt NU’s 22-game home unbeaten streak that dated back to Feb. 11, 2012.

“We just didn’t shoot it enough tonight,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “We were looking to make pretty plays when we shouldn’t have and that’s not our game.  We need to make better decisions on the blue line, get it on net and crash the net.  It was a tough night in that regard.  We’re just going to have to man up and get in there tomorrow to have any chance.”

Teichroeb kept the Purple Eagles in the game in his first contest as a Purple Eagle, stopping 39 of 41 attempts on net.

“I was very impressed with Jackson tonight,” Burkholder added. “He’s the star of the game, and unfortunately we didn’t get the win for him.  Jackson is highly decorated coming out of juniors.  We thought he would be really good, and if that’s the start of it than we’re in great shape.”

The opening period was a back-and-forth affair where neither team found the back of the net.  Both squads had a pair of power play opportunities, but the goaltenders stood strong between the pipes as Teichroeb pushed aside 13 Clarkson shots, while Greg Lewis made six stops.

Niagara was the first to capitalize on the powerplay as Mike Conderman secured his first goal as a Purple Eagle seven minutes into the second frame.  Kevin Ryan connected with Conderman who flew down the left wing before wrapping around the net, and pushing the puck past Lewis.  Teichroeb was awarded the secondary assist on the tally.

Clarkson would score the game’s final two goals, with the equalizer coming at the midway mark of the second while on the two-man advantage off the stick of Allan McPherson.  Paul Geiger had the initial shot on Teichroeb that flew wide off the glass, but the rebound bounced out to McPherson who snapped it top shelf to make it 1-1.

The Golden Knights continued to press in the third period, peppering Teichroeb with shots until Jarrett Burton secured the victory for Clarkson after finding a loose puck in front of the trafficked NU net and sneaking it past the goaltender.  The Purple and White pulled Teichroeb in the waning seconds of the game, but Niagara’s efforts were pushed aside by Lewis.

Niagara finished the game with 20 shots, compared to Clarkson’s 41 looks on net.

The Purple Eagles will look to rebound against the Golden Knights with a 2 p.m. game at Dwyer Arena. Tomorrow’s game will be available on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with Dave Miller and Chris Panek on the call.

Colgate Shuts Out Ferris State

0

HAMILTON – After a wild 7-4 game last night, the Colgate men’s hockey team used stellar defense to earn a weekend split against Ferris State after a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Starr Rink.

Colgate (1-1-0) saw Eric Mihalik earn his second career shutout. The senior was given the start and pushed aside 25 shots by the Bulldogs, including nine in the opening 20 minutes. He got help from his defense as the Raiders blocked 21 shots with Spiro Goulakos leading the way with four blocks.

Kyle Baun provided the only offense Colgate needed with his first goal of the season, which came on the power play. Tyson Spink and Mike Borkowski were given assists on the play. Borkowski and Baun finished the weekend with three points on a goal and two assists.

Ferris State (1-1-0) was unable to get the offense going against the Raiders, but backup Charles Williams gave them a chance to get back in the game as he made 28 saves, including a pair of highlight-reel stops prior to the goal by Baun. The Bulldogs were shutout only once all of last season.

Each team earned a chance on the power play in the first period, but they had a combined three shots with the extra man. Colgate did get a little lucky early in the frame as Brandon Anselmini and Cory Kane rang shots off the post and the shots came within seconds of each other.

Colgate scored the lone goal of the game midway through the second period as Baun camped out in the slot. Prior to the goal, Williams made huge stops on Baun and Tylor Spink. One of the saves came when he was on his back he kicked up his pad and deflected the puck out of harm’s way. However, Borkowski settled the puck down and found Tyson Spink on the goal line. The sophomore shoveled a pass to his classmate in the slot and Baun didn’t miss this time and that’s all Colgate needed.

Ferris State did have a golden opportunity early in the second period with 1:21 of 5-on-3 power play time, but the Colgate defense stepped up. Mihalik made a pair of stops and the penalty kill unit blocked a few to stay ahead 1-0.

The penalties on the Raiders continued into the third with a pair of power play chances for the visitors in the first part of the final frame.

The Bulldogs tried to tie the game with the goalie pulled for the extra skater. Tylor Spink did an excellent job winning faceoffs in his own end after a flurry of icing calls on Colgate. He won a total of four faceoffs. Mihalik had to make one save down the stretch and earned the shutout.

Colgate was 1-for-5 with the man advantage, while Ferris State went scoreless on five chances.

The Raiders are back in action on Thursday night at RIT at 7 p.m. and the game will be live on Time Warner Cable Sports in Central New York.

Canisius Posts Opening Victory

The Canisius College hockey team opened the 2013-14 campaign with a dominating 7-1 exhibition victory over Brock University on Sunday afternoon.

“Our puck movement was excellent most of the game today and it led to a good team attack and good team speed,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “Our depth was also key as everybody did a good job of getting involved and contributing to the win.”

Sophomore Ralph Cuddemi (Concord, Ontario) led the Griffs with four goals on the afternoon. Seniors Ryan Bohrer (West St. Paul, Minn.) and Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) and junior Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario) each added a tally for Canisius.

All three Griff goaltenders also saw action in the win. Senior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) posted four saves in the start with junior Keegan Asmundson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) stopping seven shots and sophomore Adam Harris (Penticton, British Columbia) posting eight saves.

The team’s leading scorer from a year ago, Gibbons picked up right where he left off last season by scoring the game’s first goal. On a 3-on-2 rush, senior Patrick Sullivan (Derby, N.Y.) found his classmate open to his left and Gibbons finished with an open look with 2:51 left in the first.

Cuddemi then tallied a natural hat trick in the second frame to blow the game open. The sophomore scored his first goal with 10:31 left in the period, scoring on a wrist shot on a 2-on-1 break for the 2-0 lead. Cuddemi then added his second goal just 2:10later, beating the Badgers goaltender five-hole from the slot while on a power play. Finally, the sophomore completed his hat trick 2:51 later when he finished another 2-on-1 rush for a 4-0 Canisius lead.

Overall, Cuddemi scored three goals in 5:01 to turn a 1-0 Canisius lead into a 4-0 advantage.

Bohrer finished the scoring in the second frame when he tipped a shot in from sophomore defender Chris Rumble (Seattle, Wash.). The goal with 2:29 remaining in the period gave the Griffs a 5-0 lead and marked Rumble’s third assist of the game.

Freeman continued the Griffs’ domination in the third period, scoring just 18 seconds into the frame on the power play. The junior snuck the puck past the Badgers goalkeeper near post for the 6-0 advantage.

Cuddemi then finished the scoring for the Griffs with his fourth tally of the day. With a two-man advantage on a power play, Cuddemi sent a wrist shot into the back of the net for a 7-0 lead.

The Badgers finally got on the scoreboard with 8:07 remaining in the third when Thomas Stajan netted a goal but it was too late as the Griffs earned the 7-1 victory.

Canisius finished the game with a 39-20 advantage in shots, which included a 22-7 advantage in the second period. The Griffs also converted 3-of-6 power plays, while killing all three Badger extra-man advantages.

The Griffs open the regular season and the defense of their 2013 Atlantic Hockey Championship on Saturday with a contest at rival Niagara. Puck drop is scheduled for7:05 p.m. in Lewiston, N.Y.

A Reporter’s View of HarborCenter

0

By Janet Schultz

NY Hockey OnLine Magazine

The media had a unique experience this past week, touring HarborCenter. We talked up several flights of stairs to what will be the parking ramp. Covered in plywood and tubing, the workers are readying it over many, many yards of concrete.

Walking to the edge of the ramp we looked over what will be retail shops, a restaurant and the hotel.

The view of the city in the distance, the Skyway traveling just to the West and above and the reflection the crane in the building to the East was breathtaking.

We could feel the excitement as John Koelmel, HarborCenter president and Cliff Benson, chief of development officer for the Buffalo Sabres talked about the project.

“We are on time,” said Koelmel. “Next October we will be ready to go with the rink, restaurant, retail and ramps.

“Mortenson Construction is doing a great job of keeping us on track.”

“There is passion in this workforce,” said Benson. “This team is proud of what they are doing and what they are bringing to life.”

“This is moving as fast as any construction project anywhere in the country,” said Benson. “Seventy-five percent of the workforce comes from within a 100 mile radius.”

More than 120 construction workers are on site six days a week totaling more than 58,000 hours of work thus far.

While fans may find some inconvenience traveling to Sabre games this season, the “WOW” factor will take over when they see updated renderings of the buildings on display in the First Niagara Center and as they walk past the construction of this $172.2 million project.

Come October 2014 fans will park in the parking ramp and utilize a pedestrian bridge that will link the third floor of HarborCenter to the second floor of the First Niagara Center.

The first floor will contact retail shops that are still in the negotiation stage as to who the tenants will be.

“We have had numerous inquiries from groups that want to partner with us,” said Koelmel.

We stood in the “kitchen” of the sports-themed restaurant that will be run by the HarborCenter and not a franchise restaurant.

“This will be under the Pegula umbrella,” said Koelmel.

“We have been working with Erie County Harbor Development and other constituencies around here because we want this to be as user friendly as possible,” said Benson.

They are looking at traffic flow and how to move people in and out of the area easily and safely.

In Fall of 2014 both harbor projects will be complete, the Casino has come on board and there are new restaurants in the Cobblestone District and the NFTA renovated their station.

All of this will make Downtown Buffalo and the Harbor Front the place to be for years to come.

A few facts:

•There is a special elevator just for the Zamboni.

•5,672 cubic yards of concrete have been placed, a standard driveway uses six cubic yards.

•89,818 feet of post-tensioned cables have been installed (the green tubing in the photos)

•Three-quarters of a mile of underground plumbing and 1.7 miles of underground conduit have been installed.

•Shoring towers to support the pedestrian walkway over Perry Street are up to 32’ 4 1/2” at the tallest points.

•This will be the first three-rink facility in the NHL.
