Asmundson recorded 31 saves against the Crusaders in a 3-0 win on Saturday. The shutout was the first in his collegiate career and he also helped Canisius to its first sweep against Holy Cross since the 1999-00 campaign.

The Inver Grove Heights, Minn. native, who also earned Goaltender of the Week honors after a 4-1 win against No. 17 Denver in October, has appeared in seven games this season with a 2.37 goals against average and .936 save percentage. He currently ranks seventh nationally in save percentage in addition to 30th in goals against average.

In 13 career appearances, Asmundson owns a 2.08 goals against average and .941 save percentage.

Asmundson and the Griffs return to action this weekend with a home series against Sacred Heart. The schools are set to open the two-game set at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.

Iroquois Varsity Boys Hockey Team Start the New Year with a Win and a Tie

The Chiefs went back to their winning ways with an impressive 8-5 victory over the Jamestown Raiders on Friday night at the Jamestown ice arena. The teams played a back and forth first period with Jamestown taking an early lead, but Aiden Abraszek was able to score twice off assists by Steven Kaufmann and John Lavis and the period ended with the game tied at 2. The Chiefs blew the game open at the start of the 2nd period with a 4-goal explosion. Ryan Fehr received a pass from Andrew Takac then fired a laser from the top of the faceoff circle that beat the Jamestown goalie to give the Chiefs the lead for good. Tyler Hirsh added to the lead just 30 seconds later with a beautiful breakaway goal off an assist from Kaufmann. Kaufmann scored 20 seconds later and the rout was on. John Lavis scored off an assist from Richard Karalus making the score 6-2. The Raiders made things interesting by scoring twice before the end of the 2nd. The Chiefs put the game away for good in the 3rd period when Abraszek scored his 3rd of the game followed by another goal from Lavis. The line of Ryan Fehr, Mark Morganti, and Pat Stenzel was a force throughout the game.

The Chiefs looked to extend their winning streak when they faced Lancaster Sunday afternoon at the Depew rink. Despite controlling much of the play, the Chiefs were unable to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities hitting 3 goal posts in the 1st period which ended scoreless for both teams. The Chiefs appeared to lose the momentum they had built after a penalty resulted in a Lancaster power play goal early in the 2nd period. The Chiefs went on a power play of their own one minute later and were able to even the score with a goal by Aiden Abraszek after Ryan Marshall and Steven Kaufmann did some great work behind the Lancaster net to feed him the puck in the slot. The game remained tied into the 3rd when Richard Karalus one timed a perfect pass from John Lavis on another Chiefs power play, giving the Chiefs the lead. Lancaster tied the score 3 minutes later. It was then that Kaufmann scored a highlight reel goal going end to end and finishing off the play with a slick backhand move. The Chiefs appeared to be on their way to another victory when Lancaster pulled their goalie and tied the game with 28 seconds left, ending the game in a 3-3 tie.

The Chiefs next game is Saturday, January 11th at the Hockey Outlet.

Iroquois JV Beat Eden/Lakeshore in New Year

The JV Iroquois Chiefs played a fantastic team game on friday night against their Eden/Lakeshore oppenent.  After a busy previous two weeks where the JV team had to dealt with more than a few games with a short bench an almost healthy team competed and completed their most effective team win of the season.  In beating Eden/Lakeshore 3-2 the JV Chiefs continued their balance scoring and while playing solid team defense.  Max Testa, who was a plus 3 for the game, was outstanding in all three areas of the rink.  His assist on the first goal to a wide open Cameron Ellis was a tap in.  Alex Held, back from a long injury layoff, couldn’t have reappeared at a better time.  He has been playing quality minutes in addition to scoring some timely goals.  In terms of defense the pairing of Patrick Marrone and Owen Creighton were a shutdown couple skating against the Chiefs top line all night.  In the pipes, for his third win of the year, was Colton Degrace who stoped 12 of 14 shots.

The JV Chiefs have a 5-7-1 record through 13 games.

With a well deserved layoff coming up the JV Chiefs are ready to make playoff push with their 6 remaining games.

Syracuse Women Defeat Vermont

0

Akane Hosoyamada‘s last-second goal lifted the Syracuse ice hockey team (9-8-2) past Vermont (7-9-4) on Saturday afternoon, giving the Orange a 4-3 victory over the Catamounts at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Hosoyamada scored two goals in the contest to give SU its first win after winter break.

“We worked hard in the first period getting our feet back under us after the break,” head coach Paul Flanagan said. “We responded well with some good energy. The girls worked hard over the break and we had a good week of practice. It’s a great way to start the New Year, getting that win. It was a very back and forth game and [senior goalie] Jenesica Drinkwatermade some good saves. They did a good job pressuring us, especially on the game-tying goal in the third period.”

Julie Knerr and Caitlin Roach also had multi-point games. Knerr scored a goal and assist and Roach tallied two assists.

Jenesica Drinkwater made 26 saves, the most stops she has had so far this season, and improves to a 5-1-0 record. Vermont’s Roxanne Douville also made 26 stops between the pipes.

The Orange dominated on the dot, winning 28-of-46 (60.9%) faceoffs. Each team scored on one of two power play opportunities.

Syracuse started off strong, taking a 1-0 lead just 45 seconds into the game when Allie LaCombe notched her fifth goal of the season with assists from Nicole Renault and Caitlin Roach.

The Catamounts tied it up 5:44 into the second period when Victoria Andreakos tipped in a shot in front of the goal on the power play that got past Drinkwater to even the score at 1-1.

The Orange answered five minutes later when a lucky bounce put the puck in front of the net, where Knerr was ready for the tip in to regain the lead for Syracuse. Brittney Krebs took the initial shot from the right side that bounced off the boards and set Knerr up for the score with 10:56 to go in the second stanza.

Sadie St. Germain nearly put one in the net with five minutes left in the second period when she stole the puck between two defenders at the blue line, took control in front of the net and wristed one at Douville, who saved it but nearly let it slip past the goal line.

Vermont put a lot of pressure on goal in the closing minute of the second period but two saves by Drinkwater and good defense by Roach maintained SU’s lead going into the second intermission.

Hosoyamada made it a two-point lead with 9:22 left in the contest when she took the puck up the left side of the ice into the SU offensive zone, skated it to in front of the net and slapped it past Douville.

Amanda Pelkey answered in similar fashion, doing all the work on the Catamount’s second goal of the day. She brought it up the ice and wristed it past Drinkwater at the doorstep to cut the lead to 3-2 with 8:34 remaining in the game.

Vermont would delete the SU advantage with 2:17 left in regulation, evening the game at 3-3. Andreakos took a shot at Drinkwater who saved it but the puck trickled to the left goalpost and Dayna Colang was there to notch the game-tying goal.

A hooking penalty on the Catamounts gave SU the man-advantage to close out the final 48 seconds of the third period and the Orange capitalized, notching the game-winner with 7.9 seconds on the clock to win it 4-3. Roach and Larissa Martyniuk put pressure on the Vermont defense, which blocked all three of their shots but Hosoyamada would find the puck after a Roach shot in time to score her second goal of the afternoon to win the game.

Hobart Wins Buck Supply Winter Classic

0

The Hobart College hockey team downed the No. 1 team in the nation and previously undefeated Plattsburgh State 3-1 in the championship game of the Cardinals’ Buck Supply Winter Classic in Plattsburgh, N.Y., tonight. It’s the third time in program history that the Statesmen have upset the No. 1 team in the country.

Previously, Hobart topped then No. 1 Oswego 5-2 on Dec. 11, 2010, and the Statesmen upset then No. 1 Manhattanville 5-2 on Jan. 22, 2005.

This year’s Statesmen improve to 4-4-4 overall. Hobart advanced to the championship of the Winter Classic after handing No. 7 Williams its first loss of the season yesterday, topping the Ephs in overtime by score of 3-2. Plattsburgh State is now 10-1-2 overall.

Six different Statesmen earned a point in the victory and sophomore Lino Chimienti (Montreal, Quebec) made a career-high 39 saves, playing all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart. Chimienti was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Sophomore Mac Olson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and first-years Mitch Beyer (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Carl Belizario (Dorval, Quebec) joined Chimienti on the all-tournament team.

The Statesmen jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, scoring their two goals just 19 seconds apart. Beyer gave Hobart a 1-0 advantage at 7:58 finding the back of the net on a shot from the high slot. It was his first collegiate goal. Junior Peter Quigley (Monroe, Conn.) earned the assist. Just 19 seconds later, sophomore Bo Webster (Aurora, Ontario) chipped in his third goal this season on a turnaround shot in the left circle after a pass from junior Brad McBride (Lone Tree, Colo.).

In the second period, Plattsburgh State out shot Hobart 16-8, but the Statesmen defense held strong as Hobart held its 2-0 lead into the third period. Just over six minutes into the final stanza, McBride broke through for a one-on-one with the Cardinals’ goalie, Mathieu Cadieux. Cadieux sprawled out to make the stop. Minutes later, Olson had his own breakaway. This time Cadieux skated out to push the puck away with his stick before Olson could get a shot off. Cadieux finished with 25 saves in 59:51 in goal.

With just under 10 minutes left in the game, Alex Jensen almost put Plattsburgh State on the board. During a Statesmen power play, Jensen broke through the Hobart defense and fired a shot on goal, but Chimienti rejected the chance. The Cardinals came inches away from capitalizing with just under six minutes on the clock. Barry Roytman drilled a shot that banged off the post, and the rebound bounced out to Luke Baleshta. He pushed a shot on goal, but Chimienti was there to make the save once again.

With just 2:26 remaining in the game and seconds after the Cardinals pulled their goalie for the extra skater, Olson sent in an empty net goal to put Hobart up 3-0. Olson now shares a team-high with five goals this season. Sophomore Ben Gamache (Longlac, Ontario) was credited with the assist.

With just 40 seconds remaining, Rich Botting broke through for Plattsburgh prohibiting the shutout by scoring on a shot from just inside the blue line. Dillan Fox and Alex Brenton picked up the assists.

The Cardinals finished with a 40-28 advantage in shots. Hobart went 0-for-1 on the power play and killed all three of Plattsburgh’s power play attempts.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 10, when they travel to take on Nichols at 6:40 p.m.

Niagara Gets First On-the-Road Win

0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Behind four second-period goals and two tallies from Mike Conderman, the Niagara hockey team battled from behind three times to down the Bentley Falcons, 5-3 Saturday evening at the John Ryan Skating Arena.

The Purple Eagles (4-11-3; 4-4-3 AHA) also received goals from Chris LochnerIsaac Kohls and Hugo Turcotte on their way to the first road victory of the season, while freshman goaltender Jackson Teichroeb was solid in net, stopping 30 of the 33 shots Bentley fired on goal.  Niagara put 33 shots on target as well while Falcons’ netminder Branden Komm finished with 28 saves, suffering the loss.

“It feels really good when you have a room full of guys who paid the price, had the passion and attention to detail to do whatever it took to get the win,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “Bentley is a really good first-place team with some very talented players offensively.  When they pushed we pushed back harder and we came out with a huge win.”

Bentley (9-8-2; 7-3-2 AHA) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 4:54 into the game behind a power play goal.  A Brett Switzer feed to Jared Rickford stationed in the slot was one-timed past Teichroeb for the period’s only goal.

The second period saw a combined six goals as Niagara battled back three times from a goal down to head into the final period holding a 4-3 lead.

Lochner started the scoring for the Purple Eagles as the junior ripped a shot from the left faceoff circle that beat Komm clean top corner stick side at 3:21.  Midway through the middle frame Bentley regained its lead as Andrew Fitzstephens cleaned up a rebound on a shot by Tyler Deresky, whose slap shot was saved by Teichroeb, but the puck jumped out to Fitzstephens for the easy wrist shop into an open net.

The Purple and White responded quickly with its first of two power play goals at 11:14 with a textbook play by Lochner, Ryan Rashid and Conderman.  The trio combined with one-time feeds that ended with Conderman’s one-timer at the top of the slot, beating Komm over the shoulder.

Bentley answered a little over two minutes later with its own power play tally by Andrew Gladiuk to take a 3-2 lead at 13:22, but Dineen and Conderman gave the Purple Eagles their first lead of the contest with a goal each to make it 4-3 heading into the third period.

With less than two minutes remaining in the stanza, Turcotte took advantage of the extra attacker while on a delayed Bentley penalty, beating Komm with a deflection off a Matt Dineen shot through traffic.  On the ensuing power play, the Purple Eagles would score goal number four as a Matt Williams‘ shot from the top of the slot was tipped in by Conderman for his second of the game.

With 6:05 left in regulation Niagara added a critical separation goal as Kohls scored on the rebound off a Brock Edwards shot to make it a two-goal game and keep the Purple and White undefeated against Bentley in the all-time series (6-0-2).

For the first time this season, the Purple Eagles scored a pair of power play goals in a game, going 2-for-5 overall, and went 2-for-4 while a man down.

“Special teams are a big part of college hockey and we were struggling during the first semester,” added Burkholder.  “Our power play has gotten better on a daily basis during practice and the guys were rewarded tonight.  A lot of it was just outworking Bentley’s guys, winning face offs and winning loose pucks.  It was things like that which made the difference in the game.”

Niagara brings play back to Dwyer Arena after an eight-game road trip when the Purple Eagles host the AIC Yellow Jackets in a weekend series starting on Friday, Jan. 10 and wrapping up the following day.  Both contests are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. starts.

Tickets are still available for both contests so call the Niagara Tickets Office (located inside Dwyer Arena) at 716-286-TIXX, visit www.PurpleEagles.com/Tickets or by emailing [email protected] to reserve your seats!

Colgate Wins Mariucci Classic

0

MINNEAPOLIS – After winning a shootout against top-ranked Minnesota last night, the Raiders won the 2014 Mariucci Classic with a 3-0 shutout over No. 2 Ferris State.

Colgate (7-9-3) got another great start from rookie goalie Charlie Finn as he earned his first collegiate shutout with 19 saves.

Darcy Murphy added his 10th goal of the season, while Spiro Goulakos and Mike McCann also scored for the Raiders. Brett Corkey was the point leader for Colgate with a pair of assists.

It was the second shutout of the season against the Bulldogs and the win ended Ferris State’s 16-game unbeaten streak, which was the longest in the nation.

“I was really proud of our effort this weekend,” head coach Don Vaughan said. “I thought defensively tonight we played a sound game. Our energy was good again and we didn’t give up a lot of second and third opportunities and that is what we wanted to accomplish.”

Ferris State (15-2-2) saw C.J. Motte make 26 saves between the pipes, including 12 in the second period. The Bulldogs struggled on the power play, going 0-for-5 with the extra skater.

In the opening 20 minutes, both teams looked to be a little tentative and didn’t want to make a mistake, which resulting in only 10 shots on goal with six by the Bulldogs. Colgate sustained some pressure in the offensive zone in the opening minutes, resulting in a few chances. The best came off the stick of Tim Harrison, but Motte was up to the task with a toe save.

The Raiders came alive in the second period with a pair of goals with one coming on the power play. Goulakos put the Raiders on top 1-0 with his second goal of the season and first on the power play. He ripped a shot from the point that Motte couldn’t get a glove on and the Raiders led 1-0. Tyson Spink made the pass to the captain and Mike Borkowski added a helper as well for his team-leading 13th of the year.

The team got the lift it needed and it came from the captain.

“He is our leader and the guys were really happy to see him score and today is six months to the day he had his last chemotherapy treatment,” Vaughan said.  “We know that it’s out of system now and we are seeing him get back to the way we know he can play.”

The second tally of the period came off a great deflection from McCann. Corkey kept the puck in the offensive zone at the blueline and fired a wrister between the circles. McCann redirected it from the slot. The puck rang off the post and crossbar and into the net for the 2-0 advantage.

Colgate kept attacking in the third period and didn’t sit back on the Bulldogs. The Raiders went up 3-0 on its second power play goal on the night. This time it came from Murphy off of a Corkey shot from the left point. The puck hit off of Motte’s pad and Murphy swooped in and flipped a backhander into the back of the net for the three-goal lead.

From there, Finn and the defense finished off the Bulldogs, allowing only six shots in the final frame.

Vaughan stuck with his rookie goaltender after the shootout win over No. 1 Minnesota and it paid off.

“Charlie made some key stops and he made it look a little easy at times,” Vaughan added. “He made a great blocker save in the third period when we were up by two and if that went in, the momentum could have changed. He was very solid in net.”

The Raiders have known they were playing in the Mariucci Classic for a couple of years and viewed it as a way to possibly define their young team.

“We had this weekend circled on the calendar for a long time,” Vaughan said. “It can help define a team a little bit and we are a young team that is still trying to figure out who were are and a weekend like this can go a long way in giving our guys confidence.”

The Raiders will face its third ranked team in a row next weekend with a visit from No. 20 Vermont at Starr Rink on Jan. 11.

Potsdam Weekend Sweep of St. Anselm

0

POTSDAM, N.Y.-The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (5-7) got clutch scoring to complete a two-game sweep of Saint Anselm (3-5-2) with a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon. Senior goaltender Shane Talarico (Greensburg, Pa./Elmira College) made 28 saves in another stellar performance to improve to 4-0 on the season. Senior captain Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) and sophomore forward Matt Thompson (Anchorage Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears) each scored for the Bears, who are now 5-1 in their last six games.

Needing a strong start against the dangerous Hawks, Potsdam got one. Just 1:32 into the contest freshman forward Tommy Telesca (Selden, N.Y./New York Bobcats) centered a pass from behind the net and sophomore forward Todd Thomas (Davidsville, Pa./Hartford Wolfpack) fired it on a screened St. A’s senior goalie Nick Dries (Commerce Township, Mich./Baystate Breakers) and Arnold tapped it home for a 1-0 lead. The Bears moved the puck well for several minutes after the goal, but didn’t add to the lead. The Hawks slowly evened the play, but Talarico was on top of his game between the pipes. Potsdam also killed off two power plays and held the one goal advantage after 20 minutes.

The first half of the middle stanza was a defensive stalemate, but a series of penalties opened up the game over the final 10 minutes. On an odd-man rush, sophomore forward Matt Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears) beat Dries through the five-hole after a perfect pass from sophomore defenseman Brad Campagna (Monroe, N.Y./New York Bobcats) for a 2-0 lead. The rest of the period was penalty after penalty, but the score didn’t change. Potsdam killed off four more Hawk man-advantages and Talarico added eight more saves to his total after 40 minutes.

The teams continued to grind it out in a physical third period. The Bears’ defensive play and their goaltender frustrated Saint Anselm as the clock ticked down. The Hawks finally got on the board with 3:45 to go as junior forward Sean Jenkins (Boston, Mass./Boston Bulldogs) ripped a shot through a crowd in the slot to cut the lead in half. Sophomore forward Mark Meads (Middleton, Mass./Bentley University) assisted on the goal. Two minutes later, Saint Anselm Coach Ed Seney pulled Dries for an extra attacker, but the Bears and Talarico preserved the victory.

Dries stopped 21 shots on the afternoon. The Hawks finished the contest 0-8 on the power play while Potsdam was 0-3.

Bears Head Coach Chris Bernard felt his team executed the game plan extremely well this weekend.

“It’s great for us to play with the lead and we were able to establish the tone and the tenor right away,” said Bernard. “I think you saw that first goal as an example of that. We got the puck deep and we were able to make a solid play to the net and finish. Another point of emphasis for us in the second semester has been improving our penalty kill. I think the number one thing we’ve got to do is take less penalties. At the same time, sometimes you get in the flow of a game and things just happen. Our guys answered the bell today.”

Bernard, a former goalie, was very pleased with his own goaltender over the last 120 minutes.

“He (Talarico) was solid all the way through,” Bernard added. “He gave us a chance to win when we made mistakes. When there were breakdowns, he was on time with the saves that were necessary. The guys love him. They want to play hard for him and we’re excited about his performances.”

The Bears will try to keep their hot streak going next weekend when they host Castleton State on Friday and Skidmore Collegeon Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Cansius Sweeps Weekend at Holy Cross

0

Junior Keegan Asmundson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) stopped 31 shots to post his first collegiate shutout and lead the Canisius College hockey team to a 3-0 victory at Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Griffs complete the sweep and improve to 7-10-1 and 6-4-1 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Crusaders drop to 4-13-2 and 3-7-2 against league foes.

“It took us awhile to get going today and Holy Cross came out with electric legs,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “Keegan kept us in the first period and a big five-minute penalty kill really energized our bench. From that point on, we played very confident, very together and with effective effort.”

Senior Patrick Sullivan (Derby, N.Y.), junior Cody Freeman (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Stephen Miller (Boxborough, Mass.) all scored for the Griffs in the winning effort.

The Griffs struck first in the contest thanks to Freeman’s third tally of the season. From the corner, Sullivan centered the puck and Freeman swatted it out of the air and into the net from right in front for the early lead. Senior Kyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) also registered an assist on the goal with 3:08 remaining in the first.

Despite the one-goal lead, it was Holy Cross that was controlling the play of the game in the first 20-plus minutes. A five-minute major called on the Griffs actually swung the momentum to Canisius’ favor. During the five-minute power play, Holy Cross could only get one shot on goal, compared to two plus one post hit for the Griffs. Canisius then slowly made its mark on the game for the remaining 26-plus minutes.

Canisius finally took advantage of its strong play when Sullivan netted his sixth goal of the season with 14:34 remaining in regulation. The senior finished a rush to stretch the Griffs lead to 2-0 with assists going to Freeman and junior Logan Roe (Fort Myers, Fla.).

The Griffs then sealed the victory when Miller scored an empty-net goal with 1:45 left in regulation – his second tally of the season.

Holy Cross finished the game with a 31-26 advantage in shots, while neither team converted on the power play – Canisius had five extra-man chances and killed all three Holy Cross power plays.

Canisius looks to continue their winning ways next weekend with a home series against Sacred Heart. The schools begin the two-game set on Saturday at 3:05 p.m.

Canisius Takes Holy Cross 4-2

0

The Canisius College hockey team topped host Holy Cross, 4-2, on Friday night. The Griffs improve to 6-10-1 on the season with the win and 5-4-1 against Atlantic Hockey foes, while the Crusaders drop to 4-11-2 and 3-5-2 in league play.

“It was a really big win and great team effort tonight,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “We played with the lead very well and responded with a gritty third period to win game one.”

Sophomore Ralph Cuddemi (Concord, Ontario) led the Griffs with a career-best three points, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Junior Doug Jessey (Langdon, Alberta) and sophomore Chris Rumble (Seattle, Wash.) also added goals for Canisius.

Senior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded 33 saves to anchor the Canisius defense in victory.

After a scoreless opening period, the team traded power-play tallies to start the second frame. Jessey opened the scoring with his third goal of the season. The junior ripped a shot into the net from the point for the 1-0 lead with 14:16 remaining in the stanza with the assists going to Cuddemi and freshman Shane Conacher (Burlington, Ontario).

The Crusaders answered back with a power-play goal of their own when Brett Lubanski tipped a shot high into the net with6:52 left in the period.

The teams then traded even-strength goal to finish the period. Canisius reclaimed its lead with 2:13 remaining in the second when Cuddemi scored his fourth of the year. Rumble fired a shot on goal that was saved but the rebound went to Cuddemi and he buried his chance for the 2-1 lead. Sophomore Mathew Backhouse (Thompson, Manitoba) also registered an assist on the tally.

The Canisius lead, however, was short-lived as Holy Cross answered right back just 36 seconds later when Adam Schmidt scored as the teams headed into the final intermission knotted at two.

The Griffs finally claimed the lead for good when Rumble scored his third goal of the season. The sophomore sent a shot toward goal from the blue line that deflected off a Holy Cross defender and into the net for 3-2 advantage with 8:11remaining in regulation. Sophomore Stephen Miller (Boxborough, Mass.) posted the assist on the go-ahead goal.

Cuddemi then sealed the Canisius win with his second goal of the game with 2:40 remaining. Conacher forced a Holy Cross turnover and then found Cuddemi open in front from behind the net. The sophomore forward then finished his opportunity from the slot for the 4-2 final score.

Holy Cross finished the game with a 35-31 advantage in shots with both teams going 1-for-2 on the power play.

Matt Ginn recorded 27 saves in defeat for the Crusaders.

NU Ties Bentley/Game One

0

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Niagara and Bentley hockey teams battled to a 2-2 draw on Friday evening at the John Ryan Skating Arena in Atlantic Hockey action.

Both teams battled back from a goal down in regulation to send the contest into the extra time where Bentley seized control, outshooting NU 6-3 in overtime.  Neither team could notch the go-ahead goal though, and for the third time this season the Purple Eagles had to settle for a stalemate.

Niagara saw freshman goaltender Adrian Ignagni step up with 34 saves in net, including six in overtime, while Brock Edwards was credited with the game-tying goal and Ryan Rashid added his team-leading sixth of the year.

“How the team would respond after the lengthy break was a concern of ours, but I thought our commitment to detail, our execution and effort was there from start to finish,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “Bentley is a first-place team playing at home so we need to come back tomorrow with the same effort.  If we play hard and with passion we’re going to be a really good team second semester.”

Niagara (3-11-3; 3-4-3 AHA) started the scoring as Rashid netted the Purple Eagles’ first goal 9:16 into the game.  Rashid picked up the puck in the neutral zone after blocking a Matt Maher shot and raced in one-on-one toward Bentley goaltender Branden Komm, cutting across the crease before tucking a backhand underneath the goaltender for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Ignagni kept Bentley off the board in the opening frame with 10 saves as the Purple Eagles peppered Komm with 11 looks on net.

The Purple Eagles came out firing in the second 20 minutes of play, outshooting Bentley, 14-8, but Komm denied each attempt.  Bentley (9-7-2; 7-2-2 AHA) would tally the game’s next pair of goals, first pulling level at one with a goal from Brett Gensler 16:17into the middle frame as the senior picked up a loose puck just outside the blue paint and deposited it into the net for his tenth goal of the season.

The Falcons grabbed their first lead of the contest with 16:44 remaining in regulation as Alex Grieve snapped a shot from the point that snuck its way through traffic and past Ignagni to make it 2-1.  Edwards would respond, however at 9:22 with his second goal of the season to knot the game, 2-2.  The freshman took a feed from Matt Chiarantano and let fly a shot that beat Komm over the shoulder.

The draw kept Niagara undefeated against Bentley in the all-time series (5-0-2).

Caliguiri Picks Up First Hat Trick; Potsdam Win

The New Year began with a new beginning for the men’s hockey program as the Bears hosted Saint Anselm’s College for the first time on Friday night at Maxcy Hall Arena.

The match up featured former SUNY Potsdam coach and Bears’ Hall of Famer Ed Seney returning to his old stomping grounds. Seney led Potsdam to the school’s lone SUNYAC championship during the 1995-96 season, but was now seeking a victory as a visitor.

Freshman center Vinny Caliguiri (Shoreham, N.Y. / Hartford Wolfpack) and the Bears had other ideas.
Caliguiri picked up his first career hat trick, senior goaltenderShane Talarico (Greensburgh, Pa. / Elmira College) provided another strong performance between the pipes and Potsdam defeated Saint Anselm’s 5-2 to win for the fourth time in five games.

Potsdam (4-7 overall) came out as the aggressors in facing their old coach as junior left defenseman Erick Ware (Huntsville, Ala. /Kenai River Brown Bears) and Caliguiri scored in the opening six minutes and 16 seconds.
Ware, a 2011-2012 member of the SUNYAC All-Rookie team and All-SUNYAC third team, racked up his ninth career goal and first of the season.

Potsdam carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. First periods have been advantageous for the Bears as Potsdam has outscored opponents 13-8 in that time frame.

Caliguiri found the back of the net again late in the second period after junior left wing Ken Simon (Norwell, Mass. / Philadelphia Revolution) got out on a two-on-one, wrapped around the net and delivered a centering pass on the door step.

St. Anselm’s (3-4-2 overall) answered almost immediately when senior defenseman Greg Merrill (Brighton, Mich. / Bay State Breakers) cut the deficit back to two just before the end of the second period.

Caliguiri picked up his final goal at 2:21 into the third period with a slap shot from inside the circle. Caliguiri has five goals in his last five outings.

“He [Caliguiri] was on the puck,” said fifth-year coach Chris Bernard. “That’s the primary reason that we recruited him to come here. He hunts pucks and keeps his feet moving. He got great effort from his line mates to have some synergy. And, he capitalized on that. That’s what we are going to need to do in order to win some more games.”

The Hawks’ Kody Grondin made it 4-2 with 12:23 remaining in the game. St. A’s was not able to get any closer, however as Bears’ sophomore Todd Thomas (Davidsville, Pa. / Hartford Wolfpack) added a power play goal in the closing minutes.

Senior goaltender Shane Talarico (Greensburgh, Pa. / Elmira College) recorded a season-high with 32 saves to improve to 3-0. Talarico just beat out his previous high of 31 saves in a 3-2 overtime win in the Bears’ last game against SUNY Cortland on December 7.

“He [Talarico] was on time for us,” Bernard said. “He made critical saves at critical times. He did it with in such a manner that it inspired confidence to our guys. He looked like it was going to be really tough to get a puck by him tonight. When you have a goalie that projects that persona, the confidence just spreads throughout the team.”
