Canisius Loss to RIT Seeds Them 7th

0

One goal was all the offense needed on Friday night at RIT earned a 1-0 victory against the Canisius College hockey team on Senior Night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The loss drops the Griffs to 12-18-3 on the season and 11-12-3 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Tigers improve to 10-18-5 and 9-14-3 against league foes.

“RIT played very well defensively and we couldn’t get one past them tonight,” said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. “They kept us to the outside more than we would have liked. We had a lengthy 5-on-3 power play in the second and we need to find a way to score there. We need to get more traffic at the net and find a way to get more shots to be successful.”

Senior Tony Capobianco (Mississauga, Ontario) played strong for the Griffs in the defeat, recording 29 saves on 30 shots. The senior is now just 17 saves shy of the program’s all-time record entering the regular-season finale on Saturday.

Canisius had a number of chances to grab the lead in the contest during the first two periods but couldn’t capitalize. SeniorKyle Gibbons (Westlake, Ohio) just missed on a 2-1 break, sending his shot wide with five minutes remaining in the first period. The Griffs also had 1:24 of 5-on-3 early in the second but couldn’t convert, while junior Tyler Wiseman’s (Burlington, Ontario) shot in the closing seconds of the second frame deflected past the RIT netminder but hit the post to keep the game scoreless through 40 minutes.

The Tigers took advantage in the third frame, scoring just 2:19 into the stanza. Danny Smith joined a rush for RIT and just got a piece of a one-timer, which fluttered into net for the game’s only goal. Canisius was unable to find the equalizer in the final 17-plus minutes as the Tigers hung on for the 1-0 victory.

RIT finished the game with a slight advantage in shots, 30-27. The Griffs were scoreless in four power-play chances, while the Tigers went 0-for-1 with the extra-man advantage.

Mike Rotolo stopped all 27 shots he saw to earn the shutout victory for the Tigers.

The same two schools wrap up the regular season tomorrow night in Rochester. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: The Griffs are now locked into the seven seed for the Atlantic Hockey Tournament, which begins next weekend … Canisius won the 2013 Atlantic Hockey Championship last season with the seven seed … Capobianco now has 2,812 saves during his career, just 17 shy of the school record held by Dan Morrison (2,829 saves) … The Griffs have not won a game this season when failing to score three goals (now 0-16-2) … The game marked the final regular-season contest for the Griffs at the Buffalo State Sports Arena … Canisius honored its seven seniors – Capobianco, Gibbons, Ryan Bohrer, Ben Danford, Taylor Law, Duncan McKellar and Patrick Sullivan – prior to Friday’s game for playing in their final home regular-season contest … The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Canisius in the series.

NU Over Air Force; Final Regular Season Game Today (March 1)

0

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara hockey used four third-period goals to down visiting Air Force, 4-1, Saturday evening at Dwyer Arena.

Chris Lochner scored with 16:16 left in the third period to level the game at one apiece and trigger the four-goal period.   Kevin Ryan and Matt Chartrain also scored in the third for the Purple Eagles while Patrick Divjak added an empty netter.  Starting NU goaltender Jackson Teichroeb pushed aside 26 shots, including 15 in the second period.

“It was a good win.  It may not have been a pretty game on either end, but I thought we got through the penalty trouble in the second period and then had fight in the third period which led to a big two points for us,” head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “Air Force is a championship program so for us to get it gone like we did is huge.  Playoff hockey for us started three weeks ago.  We challenged the guys at the start of the Canisius series and I’ve been happy with how we’ve played since then.”

After a scoreless first period, Air Force (19-12-4; 14-9-3 AHA) put Teichroeb to the test by peppering him with 16 second-period shots while at the other end Air Force goalie Jason Torf only had four shot to push aside.  The Colonials were able to draw first blood with five minutes left in the frame off the stick of A.J. Reid.  Jason Fabian took a low shot from the left faceoff circle that Reid deflected on the backhand under the pads of Teichroeb for his fifth of the season.

The Niagara (11-17-5; 11-10-5 AHA) comeback started at 3:44 of the final period as the Purple Eagles leveled the game off Lochner’s fifth goal of the season.  With 39 seconds remaining on the man-advantage, Tyler Akeson had the initial shot to the right of Torf which was blocked in front and eventually cashed in on at the top of blue paint by Lochner to level the game.

Niagara then brought its fans to its feet twice in a 25 second span to grab a lead it would not relinquish. Ryan scored what would stand as the game-winning tally at 7:35 off a blast from the point for his fifth of the season.  Chartrain followed that with his own tally, scoring his third of the season off a wrist shot that beat Torf far side over the shoulder.

Divjak would add the empty net goal in the final two minutes of the game to secure the victory.

The Purple Eagles went 1-for-2 on the power play, while shutting down all five man-up opportunities for Air Force.  The shot count was in favor of the Falcons, 27-20.

Niagara and Air Force finish off the regular season tomorrow at Dwyer Arena with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.

Men’s Hockey Drops Decision to Harvard; Murphy Scores 15th

HAMILTON – Colgate outshot the Crimson, 34-24, but couldn’t get one by the Harvard goaltender in the final two periods and dropped a tough 2-1 decision.

The Raiders (16-12-3, 12-6-3 ECAC Hockey) didn’t drop in the conference standings and remained second as Cornell lost to Dartmouth on Friday night. Colgate cannot fall lower than third with one game to go.

Darcy Murphy had the lone goal for Colgate in the first period with assists to Joe Wilson and Ryan Johnston. Charlie Finn made 22 saves in net with 12 coming in the first period.

Harvard (10-14-4, 6-11-4 ECAC Hockey) saw Steve Michalek stand on his head with 33 saves and 24 of them came in the first and second periods. Danny Fick scored his first collegiate goal as a senior. His goal tied the game at 1-1 in the opening frame. Phil Zielonka tallied the gamewinner in the third off a pass from Greg Guzzo.

The Raiders struck first on the power play with 12:21 left in the opening period. Johnston gained the zone and flicked the puck to Wilson. He charged in below the dots and dropped a pass to Murphy. The team leader in goals added to his total with a blast that rang off the post and in. For Murphy, it was his 15th of the season and his fifth on the power play, which is a career high.

Harvard answered with just over two minutes left in the frame with Fick scoring his first collegiate goal with quick swat off a Luke Esposito pass. The Crimson rushed up ice as a Colgate power play expired, which resulted in a 3-on-2. Esposito gained the zone and made short pass to Fick in front of the net and he jammed it home to tie the game at 1-1.

The two teams combined for 28 shots in the first 20 minutes, but the goalies were on their game. Michalek made back-to-back glove stops prior to the Crimson goal, while Finn had a sprawling stop and a toe save to keep Harvard off the board early in the contest.

The second period belonged to the netminders. Michalek had 10 stops, but easily made four or five highlight stops on pucks in front of the net. Kyle Baun had a golden chance late in the frame. He was at the side of the net and got a cross-ice pass from Tyson Spink. He couldn’t get a lot of wood on the shot and Michalek made a great stop coming across the crease. Finn had nine stops in the stanza with a couple of impressive glove stops.

Harvard took the lead with 13:32 left in the game with Zielonka scoring off a Colgate a turnover in its own zone. The Raiders tried a cross-ice pass that Guzzo knocked down at the blueline. He found Zielonka in front and he put it home for the 2-1 lead.

The Crimson packed it in and ran the trap in the neutral zone to hang on. Colgate had a few chances to tie the game, including a power play late in the game, but Michalek continued to keep the Raiders out of the net to earn the 2-1 win.

The Raiders scored once on the power play in five chances and kept the Crimson off the board on four opportunities. Colgate was able to killed off a 5-on-3 power play as well.

Senior night is up next for the Raiders tomorrow night at Starr Rink as Colgate honors Eric Mihalik and Mike McCann prior to the game. Tickets are still available and can be purchased one hour before game time.

0
The RIT men’s hockey team wraps up the regular season with a home-and-home series against Atlantic Hockey Association rival Canisius on Friday and Saturday, with both games getting underway at 7:05 p.m. Friday’s game is at the Buffalo State Ice Arena and Saturday’s game will be the final contest in the 46-year history of Ritter Arena.

M and E Engineering and Salvatore’s Old Fashioned Pizzeria are Saturday’s game sponsors. On Saturday, RIT Athletics, in conjunction with the RIT men’s hockey team will conduct a free sweepstakes for a chance to shoot three pucks into the net through a five-inch opening for a chance to win Free Textbooks for the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 Semesters courtesy of Barnes and Noble Bookstore @ RIT (maximum value, $1,000 for registered classes). The odds of winning depend on the number of qualified entries received and successful completion of the Barnes and Noble @ RIT shootout.

Saturday will be the final RIT men’s hockey game at historic Ritter Arena, as the team moves into the Gene Polisseni Center in time for the 2014-15 season. Since moving to Division I in 2005, RIT is 85-47-18 at the 2,100-seat arena and 68-25-15 against AHA foes at home. Ritter Arena has been the home of the Tigers for 46 years and was the site of countless ECAC West Championship games, AHA Quarterfinal games, and the 1989 and 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship games.

RIT currently has 19 points in AHA play, which puts them in a tie for tenth place with American International. Canisius is tied for sixth in the league standings with 25 points. If the season ended before this weekend’s games, RIT would travel to Canisius for a first round series.

On Saturday, RIT will honor seniors Nolan Descoteaux (Dallas, TX/South Shore Kings), Mike Colavecchia (Maple, Ontario/Lindsay Muskies), Eliot Raibl (Vancouver, British Columbia/Quesnel Millionaires), Ben Lynch (Blaine, MN/Lincoln Stars),Adam Mitchell (Crofton, MD/Baystate Breakers), and Greg Noyes (Lucan, Ontario/Salmon Arm Silverbacks). This group has helped lead RIT to a 63-60-24 record in four seasons. As freshmen and sophomores, this group helped lead RIT to back-to-back Atlantic Hockey Association Championship games and the 2011 Vermont Catamount Cup Championship. Last year, RIT defeated national power Michigan. The group has combined for 146 goals, 243 assists, and 389 points in 771 games played.

RIT split a two-game series at Air Force last weekend, falling by a score of 4-3 on Friday, while rallying to win by a score of 3-2on Saturday. On Friday, Ben Lynch (Blaine, MN/Lincoln Stars) had a goal and an assist. On Saturday, Josh Mitchell (Osoyoos, British Columbia/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) scored the game-winning goal with 9:22 left in regulation, while Mike Rotolo(Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) made 26 saves. The win on Saturday snapped a nine-game winless streak and was RIT’s first victory in 35 days.

Colavecchia leads the team in scoring with 29 points on 12 goals and 17 assists. Lynch and Dan Schuler (Webster, NY/Powell River Kings) are right behind with 11 goals. Noyes leads all RIT defensemen in scoring with 23 points. In net, Rotolo is 6-7-3 with a 2.99 goals against average and .905 save percentage.

RIT’s power-play is sixth nationally at 22.6 percent. The RIT penalty-killing unit has allowed just five goals over its last 12 games, killing off 51 of its opponents last 56 attempts with the man-advantage (91.1 percent).

Canisius enters the weekend tied for sixth in the AHA standings with 25 points after splitting a home-and-home series against Robert Morris last weekend. Kyle Gibbons leads the team in scoring with 30 points on 13 goals and 17 assists, while Ralph Cuddemi and Patrick Sullivan have 10 goals apiece. Canisius is being outscored by its opponents, 100-91 this season. In net, Tony Capobianco has played 24 games in net for the Golden Griffins, recording an 8-11-2 record with a 3.06 goals against average and .907 save percentage. Keegan Asmundson is 4-6-1 with a 2.45 goals against average and .927 save percentage.

RIT and Canisius have enjoyed a long rivalry, as both members of the ECAC West Conference and as AHA schools. RIT is 55-19-1 all-time against the Golden Griffins and 16-9-0 since the start of the 2005-06 season. Canisius has won the last four meetings against RIT, including a 5-2 contest in Buffalo on Nov. 19. Dan Schuler (Webster, NY/Powell River Kings) scored both RIT goals,2:02 apart in the first period, while Todd Skirving (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Sioux Falls Stampede) dished out a pair of assists.

Tickets are available for Saturday’s game at the Gordon Field House and Activities Center Box Office or by phone at (585) 475-4121. Fans can also purchase tickets at www.rithockey.com. THIS WEEK: SENIOR WEEKEND AT STARR
The Raiders will be in action for the final time in the regular season this weekend as Colgate hosts Harvard and Dartmouth. Both schools are tied for 10th in ECAC Hockey with 14 points, but are still alive in the hunt for a home playoff series in the first round of the conference tournament. The Crimson are coming off a weekend sweep by Yale and Brown at home, while the Big Green earned three league points with a win over the Bears and a tie versus the Bulldogs.

NEXT UP: A WEEK OFF BEFORE QUARTERFINALS
Colgate is set to take a week off after this weekend as the Raiders earned a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Colgate’s possible opponent will not be determined until the first round is over due to the re-seeding of teams after the opening series. The Raiders face the second-lowest seed to advance in the quarterfinals. Tickets are on sale now for the weekend of March 14-16.

NOW IN BOTH POLLS
The Raiders joined both polls for the first time this season as Colgate is ranked 15th in the USA Hockey/USA Hockey Magazine National Poll. The Raiders are in the USCHO National Poll for the third-straight week at No. 16, which is a season high. Colgate is one of five teams in the league that are ranked, joining Union, Quinnipiac, Cornell and Yale.

SENIOR NIGHT SATURDAY
Colgate will honor two of its seniors on Saturday night as they will be playing in their final regular season game at Starr Rink. Eric Mihalik and Mike McCann have made significant contributions to the program since arriving on campus. Mihalik ranks 10th all-time in wins with 31 in his career and has played in 82 career games, which is fifth all-time. He currently ranks fourth in goals against average at 2.85 and his .901 save percentage is in the top-10. McCann has appeared in 138 games for the Raiders entering the weekend. He has 29 career points on 15 goals and 14 helpers. His seven goals this year are a career best.

LEAGUE VICTORIES
This year has been one of the most successful conference years under head coach Don Vaughan. The Raiders have 12 wins in ECAC Hockey with a 7-2-2 mark in the second half of the season. The 12 victories in league is the most since Colgate had 14 in 2005-06. The Raiders won their second Cleary Cup title that year and made the final four of the conference tournament.

BYE CLINCHED
Colgate has earned a first-round bye in the upcoming ECAC Hockey Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons. The Raiders can finish between the second and fourth spots in the standings after this weekend. Union has already clinched the Cleary Cup for regular season champions. The Raiders will not know their opponent until the conclusion of all four first round series as the league reseeds.

SPINK TWINS TAKE TURNS
Friday night at Princeton it was Tyson Spink and then on Saturday it was Tylor Spink at Quinnipiac that led the Raiders to each win. Tyson tallied his first career multi-goal game with a hat trick at Hobey Baker Rink with one of the goals coming on the power play. Tylor had two assists against the Tigers, but turned in his best performance against Quinnipiac with two goals, including the gamewinner.

SECOND HALF SUCCESS
The Raiders have enjoyed success in the second half of the season with a 9-2-3 record to get them in the top-20 in the country. It has not come easy with many games against ranked opponents. However, this team is 5-1-2 against top-20 teams in 2014. The Raiders have averaged 3.5 goals per game during the second half and are allowing just under two per game.

THE IMPORTANT FIRST GOAL
Colgate scored the first goal in both games last weekend and has done it in 17 games this year. The Raiders have won 12 of those games and tied three. In 15 of the 16 wins, Colgate has had the lead or has been tied after the first period. The Raiders are 15-1-4 with the lead or tied after 20 minutes. The lone come-from-behind win was again Union on Nov. 8when the Raiders scored three in the final period to win 5-3 on the road.

DOMINATING CLASS
The sophomore class continues to put up numbers and it continued last weekend as the Class of 2016 tallied eight of the nine goals in the two wins with five coming from the Spink twins. Overall the class has 59 of the 94 scored by the Raiders, which is 63 percent of the scoring output on the team. They have 89 assists for a total of 148 points. That number is 60 percent of the points scored this season. The top five scorers for Colgate are sophomores and all have over 20 points. The top line of the Spinks and Kyle Baun have accounted for 77 point this year.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard is coming off a weekend sweep at the hands of Yale and Brown at home. The Crimson lost to the Bulldogs by a 5-2 score and then was shutout by the Bears at 2-0. Harvard had built momentum into the weekend with a four-game unbeaten streak. The Crimson had wins over Clarkson and St. Lawrence on the road during the streak and a 6-2 win in the consolation game of the Beanpot Tournament against Boston University. Harvard is still alive for a home playoff series with a 5-11-4 conference mark and a 9-14-4 overall record.

The Crimson’s roster is loaded with NHL draft picks with nine of them, which is the most among ECAC Hockey teams. Jimmy Vesey leads the way with 22 points on 13 goals and nine assists. Five of his 13 goals have been gamewinners and four have come on the power play. Kyle Criscuolo is tied with Vesey for the team lead in power play goals and has 19 points on 11 goals and eight assists. Sean Malone has 18 points on five goals and 13 helpers as a rookie. The power play has had its struggles this season with only 16 goals in 110 chances for a 14.5 percent efficiency.

In goal, Harvard has had two capable netminders all season in Steve Michalek and Raphael Girard. Michalek has played in 15 games and has a 2.41 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. Girard has great conference numbers with a 1.99 GAA and a .938 save percentage. Both lead the league.

SERIES HISTORY
Colgate and Harvard will be facing each other for the 78th time since the first meeting back in 1960-61, which was the opening season of ECAC Hockey. The Crimson hold a 47-23-7 advantage in the series, but the matchup has been even as of late with Colgate having a slim series lead at 5-4-3 margin in the last 12 meetings. The two teams have played 11 overtime contests with Harvard owning a 4-1-6 record in those games.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth had a rough start to the season with eight-straight losses and had a winless streak of five games in January, but the Big Green has seen success as of late. Dartmouth is riding a four-game unbeaten streak into the weekend. The Big Green beat Brown and tied Yale at home in its last two games. The tie with the Elis helped Colgate secure a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey Tournament. Defense has been an issue as Dartmouth has allowed around 3.5 goals per game this season. With the recent success, the Big Green is 10th in the standings with 14 points and is three points back of hosting a first-round series.

Eric Neiley leads the way with 22 points on 12 goals and 10 assists. He has four power play goals, which is tied with Brandon McNally for tops on the team. McNally has 17 points for second on the team with five goals and a team high 12 helpers. Rookie Grant Opperman has been a bright spot with 15 points on eight goals and seven assists. Dartmouth has missed its top scorer from a season ago in seven of its games as Tyler Sikura has nine points in 18 games played. He had the gamewinner on Friday night against Brown in the 2-1 win.

In goal, Charles Grant has played in 18 games and has a 6-9-3 record. He has a 3.24 goals against average and a .901 save percentage. Grant has been in goal every night of the unbeaten streak and has allowed more than one goal only once.

SERIES HISTORY
The Dartmouth-Colgate series is one of the most competitive in the country with the Big Green leading the series at 45-43-5. The series has gone to overtime 14 times with Colgate holding a 5-4-5 advantage after the 14th time in 2011. Colgate earned a 4-1 win in January at Thompson Arena.  These two teams played the longest game in Colgate history as it was just over 121 minutes long with Kyle Wilson ’06 scoring the gamewinner in 2003 in a 4-3 win. The series began in 1928-29 with Dartmouth winning 9-1 in Hamilton.
