NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Center Giancarlo Iuorio has signed a one-year contract with VIK Västerås, a hockey club from Västerås, Sweden currently playing in the second highest league in Sweden, Hockeyallsvenskan.

“We are all very excited for Giancarlo as he takes the next step into professional hockey,” Niagara head coach Dave Burkholder said.  “It is a great opportunity in a very good league. I am glad he parlayed a storied career into this opportunity.”

The Richmond Hill, Ont. native finished his senior season ranked eighth in the nation in goals (21), and added 13 assists to hit the 30-point mark for the second time in his four years at Niagara.  Iuorio earned a spot on the First Team All-AHA team after garnering 25 points on 15 goals and 10 assists in league play despite only playing in 16 conference games due to an injury. Along with his four power play goals and two short-handed scores, the three-time AHA Player of the Week and November’s Player of the Month also led the AHA with a pair of hat tricks.

The assistant captain wrapped up his career with 45 scores and 57 helpers, joining the 100-point club on March 15, 2013 versus R.I.T in a 3-2 victory.  Only 13 Purple Eagles have joined the illustrious group, with Paul Zanette (’11) being the last to record a 100 points in 2011.

Iuorio is the third Purple Eagle to join the professional ranks since the conclusion of the 2012-13 season, joining Jason Beattie and Carsen Chubak who signed with the Rochester Americans and the Adirondack Phantoms, respectively.
