Long Island U Women’s Ice Hockey Takes Three of Four NEWHA Weekly Awards

  • BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU women’s ice hockey team won three of the league’s four weekly awards, it was announced by the NEWHA office Tuesday. Freshman Jeannie Wallner was named the NEWHA Player of the Week, junior Alva Johnsson was named the NEWHA Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Tindra Holm was named the NEWHA Rookie of the Week.

Taking on Sacred Heart this past weekend, Wallner scored two goals in her team’s 3-2 victory on Friday before setting up the game-tying goal in an eventual 2-1 win over the Pioneers on Saturday. She also was 14-for-19 on face-offs during her team’s 2-0 week and blocked two shots.

Johnsson helped the Sharks pick up two victories against NEWHA-opponent Sacred Heart this past week, blocking three shots and scoring the game-winning overtime goal against the Pioneers on Saturday.

Holm made 50 saves on 52 shots in back-to-back NEWHA victories for LIU over Sacred Heart, conceding just two power-play goals. Holm helped the team finish 9-for-11 on the penalty kill over the weekend. She leads the NEWHA in minutes played (303:35) and has a .934 save percentage.
