Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the world’s most famous Brass Band is making its long awaited return to Australia in its first tour in over 10 years.
The band will perform at Llewellyn Hall on Saturday 30th July.
Winner of 96 Brass Band competitions and stars of the hit film Brassed Off! these sons of Yorkshire display all the power and glory of great brass music in a concert sure to thrill.
The Grimethorpe Colliery Band was formed in 1917, as a leisure activity for the workmen at the colliery.
In 1992, shock waves reverberated around the mining communities of Great Britain when the British Government announced Grimethorpe was on the list of mines to be shut and the 17 members of the band employed at the colliery were to be made redundant. The pit closures were announced just 5 days before the band were due to contest the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Despite the turmoil of the closures and redundancies the band triumphed to become the Champion Band of Great Britain. The story of Grimethorpe Colliery Band’s legendary win that year was later immortalized in the 1996 film Brassed Off! starring Ewan McGregor, Pete Postlethwaite and Tara Fitzgerald.
Tour Promoter, Andrew Kay says “It is both a privilege and a pleasure to be able to bring Grimethorpe back to Australia for its fourth Australian tour and its first in 10 years. It is truly, a mighty band! I have had the pleasure of presenting Grimethorpe in Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand as well as at New York’s Carnegie Hall and everywhere we have been, audiences have given them a well-deserved and rapturous reception.”
Led by Conductor & Musical Director Brian Grant, the 29 piece band’s repertoire for the 10 concert Australian tour will include music from the film including Death and Glory, Florentine March and The William Tell Overture.
