ROCHESTER, NY – Senior forward Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73’s) of the RIT men’s hockey team was named one of 15 candidates for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award on Tuesday, Oct. 30. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in the community.

One of RIT’s co-captains, Brown has three goals in five games this season. On Oct. 20, he scored his third career hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Colgate and was named the Atlantic Hockey Offensive Player of the Week. Brown enjoyed a tremendous 2017-18 campaign, setting a RIT Division I team record with 29 goals, which was tied for second nationally. In 2016-17, Brown led RIT with 16 goals and 27 points. Brown has appeared in 116 career games with 55 goals, 34 assists and 89 points. He is tied with Simon Lambert and Tyler Brenner for the career goal mark at RIT’s Division I level.

Brown was a 2017-18 Atlantic Hockey first team selection. In 2018, Brown, won RIT’s Lou Spiotti Coaches Award and was recipient of the Greg Moss Hard Hat Award.

In the classroom, Brown, a biomedical sciences major, is also a three-time Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team selection (2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18). Brown has delivered Teddy Bears to children at the Rochester Regional Health Pediatric Department after the annual Teddy Bear Toss game in both 2016 and 2017. In addition, he has volunteered with Muddy’s Buddies in Rochester, which is a nonprofit, charitable organization that seeks to improve the quality of life of children and their families whose lives have been touched by cancer and other chronic illnesses.

The 15 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men’s Frozen Final Four® in April.
