ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two members of the Elmira College men’s ice hockey team were rewarded for their efforts after leading the Soaring Eagles to a trio of wins last week. Junior Connor Powell ’20 was crowned the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Co-Player of the Week and sophomore Jake Sabourin ’21 received Goalie of the Week accolades.

Powell spread seven points (4g-3a) across wins over SUNY Potsdam, King’s (Pa.) and Wilkes. He scored at least one goal in each game, including a pair of game-winners and two power-play tallies, to extend his season-opening point streak to five consecutive contests.

On Tuesday, October 30, against SUNY Potsdam, the Merrimack, New Hampshire, native lifted the Soaring Eagles to a 3-2 non-conference win by netting the game-winning goal with 6:09 remaining in the third period. Powell followed that performance with a pair of three-point outings. He scored twice – once on the power play and once shorthanded – as EC opened UCHC play with a 7-3 defeat of the Monarchs on Saturday night. The following night versus Wilkes, the third-year forward buried the eventual game-winner with the man advantage, in addition to dishing out two helpers.

In five games, Powell is tied for the team lead in points (10), and paces all Soaring Eagles in both goals (6) and game-winners (2). Among national leaders, he is tied for second in Division III in both power-play and game-winning goals.

Sabourin made his second start of the 2018-19 season on Saturday evening against Wilkes at the Murray Athletic Center and picked up his first win in the 5-2 victory. The Catonsville, Maryland, native logged 41 saves in 59:55 minutes of action, finishing one stop shy of his single-game career-high. Although the Colonels scored the first two goals of the game, Sabourin buckled down and held the visitors scoreless for the final 51:41 with 33 consecutive saves.

Through the first two starts of his sophomore campaign, Sabourin possesses a .907 save percentage with 68 saves in 94:09 minutes of ice time.

Powell, Sabourin, and the rest of the Soaring Eagles will return to action on Friday, November 9, when they travel to Aston, Pennsylvania, to take on Neumann University at 7:00 p.m.
