Directing his attention on Canberra –
Pick a major Australian Theatre Company and you won’t have to look far to find the name David Berthold. Berthold will be in Canberra to explore the developmental and creative processes involved in producing new works within theatre companies. “I’m a great believer in companies, in the opportunities they can create for artists to be at their best and for returning audiences to share in the joy and insight artists offer.”
David Berthold’s roles have included: Artistic Associate of the Queensland Theatre Company (1991-93), Associate Director of Sydney Theatre Company (1994-99), Artistic Director of the Australian Theatre for Young People (1999-2003) where his four years as Artistic Director turned that company from crisis to a national leader, and as Artistic Director of Griffin Theatre Company (2003-2006). He has served on many panels and committees as an arts advocate and advisor, including at the Australia Council, NIDA, the Australian Musical Foundation, and several universities. He has also directed work for Theater an der Parkaue, Berlin, Auckland Theatre Company, La Boite, NIDA, Black Swan, Melbourne Theatre Company, Opera Queensland and Playbox Theatre.
As a part of The Street Theatre / Canberra Youth Theatre collaboration and a part of the Master it Series 2007, this is a rare opportunity for local Directors to work with and tap into the vast experience of this highly acclaimed director. End.
