SUNY Cortland senior forward Nick Zappia (Manlius/Kingston Voyageurs) has been chosen to the 2014-15 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men’s ice hockey all-conference first team, while freshman forward Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) has been named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year.

In addition, Broderick and freshman goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) have earned spots on the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) SUNYAC All-Rookie Team. The All-Rookie Team is coordinated by USCHO.com and is voted upon by the SUNYAC coaches to supplement the league’s official postseason awards.

Zappia, who was a third-team All-SUNYAC choice last season, led Division III nationally through the end of the regular season with 24 goals and 47 points in 25 games. He also tied for first on the Red Dragon squad with 23 assists. Zappia recorded at least point in 24 straight games to start the season, with the point streak at 26 games total dating back to last season, prior to being held scoreless in the season finale. He recorded three points in seven different contests this season, including two goals and one assist in games against Morrisville, Potsdam, Becker and Oswego.

Zappia finished his Cortland career sixth all-time in scoring with 109 points on 58 goals and 51 assists. Once the season concluded, he signed a professional contract with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL and scored a goal in each of the first two professional games.

Broderick finished tied for second in the conference with 40 points. He also tied for first on the team with 23 assists and was second with 17 goals. In 25 games, Broderick averaged 1.6 points per game. He recorded at least one point in 21 out of 25 games, which included three points in games against Brockport, Becker, Oswego, Canton and Potsdam.

Weigman finished the season with a 7-9-3 record and a .903 save percentage. He also recorded two shutouts and finished with a 4.04 goals against average. He made a school-record 65 saves in a game at eventual SUNYAC champion Plattsburgh, and he made 43 and 35 saves in shutouts versus the University of New England and Worcester State, respectively.

The Red Dragons finished the year with a record of 9-13-3 overall record.
