Men’s Hockey Freshmen Stienburg, Malone Selected at NHL Draft

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Freshman forwards Matthew Stienburg and Jack Malone from the Cornell men’s hockey team were selected by the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks, respectively, in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday afternoon. It marks the ninth straight draft in which the Big Red has been represented.

Listed as a center standing at 6-foot-1 and 182 pounds, Stienburg was selected with the first pick of the third round by the Avalanche. It was the 63th overall pick of the draft, which makes Stienburg the earliest Cornell selection at the draft since Riley Nash was taken in the first round with the 21st pick of the 2007 draft.

Stienburg will be joining Cornell via St. Andrew’s College, a prep school based in Ontario with which the Big Red has become quite familiar. Junior forward Morgan Barron and goaltender Matthew Galajda – key contributors to Cornell’s recent success – are both St. Andrew’s products. And like Barron and senior Noah Bauld, Stienburg originally hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Stienburg posted 33 goals and 42 assists for 75 points in 56 games last year at St. Andrew’s, plus a three-game cameo with the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers.

Malone was later selected in the sixth round with the 180th overall pick by the Canucks, who hosted the draft Friday and Saturday. He broke out last season with the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms, posting 19 goals and 40 assists for 59 points in 57 games. It was his second season with the squad after two seasons at Delbarton School in his native New Jersey. Malone typically plays on the right wing, standing 6-foot-1 and weighing in at 191 pounds.

Stienburg and Malone are in line to become the 75th and 76th players to appear for Cornell selected in the NHL draft. The Big Red is now represented in every NHL draft since 2011, with a total of 16 players selected over that nine-year stretch. Cornell will enter the 2019-20 season with six draft picks on its roster – three forwards (Barron, Malone and Stienburg) and three defensemen (Matt Cairns, Alex Green and Misha Song).
