College Women’s Teams Wrap up 2021!

The women’s ice hockey teams at the collegiate level have wrapped up their Fall semester and are looking forward to starting 2022.

West

Buffalo State College is under the direction of a new coach in Rachel Grampp. Grampp has served for several years as the assistant coach. The Bengals were shutout by Morrisville in their semester finale and ended with a 0-11-0 overall record. They return to the ice January 7 and 8 against Rivier University. League action returns in full force when the Bengals face Potsdam, Cortland,Plattsburgh, Canton, Morrisville and Oswego in the New Year. Then it will be on to the playoffs.

Angeline Cruzal leads in scoring with 4 goals and an assist and Jessica Auge has been in goal for the majority of the games.

RIT is in the same straits as Buff State with a 0-19 record under Coach Celeste Brown. They are home against league-rival Penn State on January 13 and 14. WNY’s Emma Roland leads in scoring with 5 goals and 3 assists followed by Lindsay Malone with 4 g/4 a. Tending goal has been Sarah Coe with 783 minutes and 14 starts.

Nazareth is boasting a 12-0 record as they head into the second half of their season. They open January 7 and 8 against Stevenson and then play Arcadia on January 14 and 15. Highlighting the last part of the year are the UCHC weekly awardees including Hailey Redders, Player of the Week; Adrianna Breham, Goalie of the Week and Sydney Swanson, Rookie of the Week; all named December 13.

East

Union College is 4-16-1 as they are back in action January 7 and 8 against Yale and Brown, respectively.

Sophie Matsoukas, a first year goalie, was named MAC Goaltender of the Week with a 20 save shutout over Franklin. Grace Heiting has 8 goals and 4 assists and Goalie Olivia Rinzel has been in the net for 838.52 minutes with a 2-12-1 record.

RPI closed out 2021 with ECAC games against Dartmouth, a win, and Harvard, an overtime loss. After they face Merrimack in the New Year they face ECAC rivals Brown, Yale, Quinnipiac, Princeton, Clarkson and St. Lawrence, a really tough schedule heading to the playoff season.

Mara Wagner has 5 goals and 4 assists to lead the scoring with Goaltender Amanda Rampado 4 wins, 8 losses with two shutouts.

Laura Severson was named Player of the Week for December 6 after scoring 2 goals in the loss to Harvard. She has played in 112 games with 11 goals and 15 assists. Audrey McCutcheon was named Rookie of the Week December 6 after a goal and assist, including the game winning goal, in the win over Dartmouth.

With a 7-4-1 overall record, Manhattanville has had two UCHC wins over Chatham before a loss to Wesleyan university. Gabrielle Cox has 9 goals and 9 assists and Goaltender Franny Gerardi is 6-4-1 with two shutouts in 618 minute of play.

Gerardi was named UCHC Goaltender of the Week December 6 for her 61 saves in the game against Chatham and Annie Niedermeir received her second Rookie of the Week honors for scoring 2 points in three games.

North

Potsdam Photo

Potsdam returns to NEWHL action against Cortland on January 7 and then faces Morrisville, Buffalo State, Canton, Oswego in league play. They are 3-8-1 overall. Kaylee Merrill has 8 goals and 1 assist to lead the scoring chart. In goal is WNY’er Hannah Barrett who has played 382.06 minutes and has a 2 win, 5 loss record. Goalie Ellie Zurfluh has a win, three losses and 1 tie with 306 minutes of play.

Clarkson continues their historic winning ways with a 15-2-3 overall record and 6-1-1 in ECACH play. Coming in January are Princeton, Quinnipiac, Cornell, Colgate, RPI, Union, Harvard and Dartmouth. Caitrin Lonergan has 12 goals and 20 assists, leading the scorers. Goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk has the 14-2-3 record and has 1127.15 minutes between the pipes. She has had three shutouts this season and was named Goaltender of the Week on December 6.

Haley Winn was named Rookie of the Week on December 2.

Also boasting a winning record as they closed out 2021 is Plattsburgh with 10 wins and 2 losses. They were named #2 in DCu/USCHO.com polls.

Plattsburgh opens January 7 vs Canton and then follows with a heavy league schedule before playoff season.

Ivy Boric has 8 goals and 14 assists and Goaltender Ashley Davis is 4-1-0 with two shutouts. Lilla Nease and Chloe Beaubien each had there wins between the pipes.

Beaubien was named NEWHL Goaltender of the Week December 14 after a 2-0-0 record with 53 saves and a .964 save percentage and 1.10 GAA.

Lily Stumm was named Rookie of the Week December 7 with a goal and an assist, 4 shots on goal and a +1.

Over at St. Lawrence the Saints face Quinnipiac and Princeton as they open January 7 and 8. They are 7-8-5 overall and 3-3-2 in league play. All their January games are ECAC league matchups through the playoffs. Abby Hustler has 4 goals and 8 assists leading the scoring for the Saints. Rachel Teslah has 3 goals and 9 assists, tying Hustler for points at 12.

Goalie Lucy Morgan is 5-8-5 overall with three shutouts.

Canton is also showing a winning overall record at 8-2-1 and open their final semester against NEWHL rivals Plattsburg and Cortland. Iida Laitinen has 9 goals and 7 assists and Micayla MacIntrye has 7 goals and 9 assists. Goalie Sirena Alvarez has four shutouts with her 8-2-1 record. She was named NEWHL Goalie of theWeek for the second time on December 7. She has a .937 save percentage, 2.00 GAA with 59 saves in a 1-1 weekend versus Buffalo and Plattsburgh. She stopped a career high 43 sog vs Plattsburgh. 

Central

Utica’s Carolyn Whitney took home Co-Player of the Week honors December 7 with her six points on the weekend with two goals and four helpers and was a plus-6 as the Pioneers swept Alvernia to improve to 8-0 in conference play.  Whitney had a goal and two assists in each game to help Utica secure the sweep.  On the year she has 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 10 games played. Utica has had a Player of the Week named each week of the season.

Utica is 9-2 overall and 8-0 in the league. They open 2022 against Middlebury and Oswego before UCHC games and the quarterfinals Georgianna Santullo has 15 goals and 9 assists leading the Pioneers in scoring with Erica Sloan in second with 9 goals and 24 assists. 

In goal Savannah Gutierrez has a 4-2 record with 2 shutouts and Angela Hawthorn has a 4-3 record with 3 shutouts. 

Syracuse was to have headed to Minnesota for a tournament to open the year, but it was canceled. They now start their second semester off with a CHA game against RIT followed by Lindenwood, Penn State and Mercyhurst. Abby Moloughney has 7 goals and 8 assists with Goaltender Arielle DeSmet with a shutout and a 5-6-3 record.

Sarah Marchand was named CHA Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after posting a goal and career high two assists in a 4-4 tie with Princeton. Victoria Klimek took home the Forward of the Week honors for the second time this season after she helped with all three goals and set up the game winner against Mercyhurst.

At 15-4-1 Colgate is looking for a playoff run this season. Coming up first are games against Harvard and Dartmouth. Danielle Serdachny has 11 goals and 19 assists to lead the Raiders and Goaltender Kayle Osborne is 9-3-1 with one shutout to lead the goaltending.

Colgate has given Head Coach Greg Fargo a contract extension through 2028. He is in his tenth season with Colgate and in 2021-22 is ranked in the country.

Colgate’s Noemi Neubauerova will join her Czech Republic Team in the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

In other new Colgate won the 2021 Smashville NCAA Showcase and Hannah Murphy was named MAC Goaltender of the Week and Rookie of the Week on November 29.

Elmira ended 2021 tying Adrian College 2-2 and open the season with NEHC play against New England College and Norwich on January 7 and 8.

Leading the scorers is Morgan Mordini with 5 goals and 13 assists and leading the goaltenders is Louise Kuehberger with a 7-2-1 record and 3 shutouts.

Erika Goleniak was named NEHC Rookie of the Week December 6 after scoring both goals in wins and a pair of assists for 3 points against Plymouth. Her 7 shots on goal set a new career mark and she has had 3 goals and 8 assists in 11 games.

With two games cancelled and one postponed Oswego opens January 8 against Utica. Games against Amherst College and Stevenson College have been cancelled and a league game against Morrisville has been postponed, all due to Covid protocols.

Oswego will celebrate Girls Hockey Day on January 15 when they face Cortland. Oswego is currently 6-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league play with Ariella Haas heading the scorers with 2 goals and 7 assists and Megan Teachout with 4 goals and 4 assists. In goal Joanna Hiebert has had 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie with 2 shutouts.

Oswego Administrative Assistant for Athletics Pamela Bushe has announced her retirement after 33 years, the past 11 in athletics, NYHOL wishes her well in this next phase of her life.

The Cortland Red Dragons are 8-2 overall. More Covid protocols are in play with the game against Wesleyan being postponed until January 18 and the January 8 game against Canton postponed, date to be announced. They beat Potsdam 4-0 on January 7 and will head to Potsdam January 8.

Grace Schorr has 13 goals and 6 assists and goaltenders Anna Hamid and Molly Goergen have kept the pucks out of the net. 

Schnorr (Camillus/Little Caesars U19AA) and sophomore defensive player Kait Bourgeois (Cobden, ON/Ottawa Thunder Midget A) have been chosen as the Northeast Women’s Hockey League (NEWHL) Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Dec. 12. Schnorr and Bourgeois helped the Red Dragons finish 3-0 during the week. Cortland defeated visiting Canton in NEWHL play Tuesday, 3-0, and beat Arcadia at home in a pair of non-league games Friday and Saturday, 4-1 and 7-0. Cortland improved to 8-2 overall and is 4-2 (8 points) and in second place in the NEWHL. Schnorr recorded five goals and two assists and a +7 plus/minus rating during the week. She scored once versus Canton, netted two goals in Friday’s win over Arcadia and had two goals and two assists in Saturday’s victory. Schnorr scored the game-winning goal in both of the Red Dragons’ weekend victories. For the season, Schnorr leads the Red Dragons with 19 points on a team-high 13 goals and six assists. Earlier this year she became Cortland’s career leader in points since the program was re-established in the 2000-01 season. She currently has career totals of 47 goals and 28 assists for 75 points. Bourgeois collected four assists and had a +7 plus/minus rating during Cortland’s three victories as the Red Dragons allowed only goal during the week. She assisted on the game-winning goal and added a second assist in the win over Canton, had a +3 rating in the Friday win over Arcadia, and registered two assists – one on the game winner – and another +3 rating in Saturday’s victory. For the season, Bourgeois leads all Cortland defenders with eight points on one goal and a team-best seven assists, and she also leads the team with a +12 rating.

The Big Red of Cornell have had three games postponed this season but return to the ice January 8 and 9 against Dartmouth and Harvard. Gilles Frechette has 5 goals and 7 assists to lead in scoring with Goaltender Lindsay Browning scoring a 4-6-1 record and three shutouts. 

Cornell’s Lenka Serdas will be heading to the 2022 Olympics with the Czech Republic team.

Hamilton College’s Nancy Loh scored her 50th career point and third goal of the season in a loss to Williams College. Loh leads scoring with 6 goals and 4 assists.

In NESCAC play Hamilton recorded two wins over Amherst College and two losses to Williams College. They return to the ice January 7 against Bowdoin (late news Hamilton won 4-0 on Jan. 7) and Trinity.

William Smith also returns to play January 7 and 8 with a 3-10-1 overall record. Mia LaPlante leads the scoring with 4 goals and 2 assists and Goaltender Amanda Aalto has two shutouts this season with a 2-4-1 record. Aalto was named Goaltender of the Week December 6 after stopping 49 of 50 shots, including all 20 against Plymouth State, giving her the second shutout of the season.

Finally, Morrisville is 4-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in league play as they their NEWHL rivals in January. Rhys Grown has 7 goals and 5 assists to lead the scorers. Goaltending has been split between Mak Ganje, Elizabeth Timby and Emma Plett. Ganje and Plett each have one shutout and Timby has had 2 wins.
