HAMILTON – Kevin McKernan scored at the 5:12 mark of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lift No. 4 Quinnipiac to a 3-2 victory over Colgate in ECAC Hockey action Friday at Starr Rink.

McKernan netted his first goal of the season with a wrist shot from the top of the right point that found its way through traffic and past keeper Charlie Finn’s right shoulder to keep the Bobcats undefeated on the season.

Tim Clifton staked Quinnipiac to a 1-0 lead late in the first period on a redirect of a Thomas Aldworth pass at the top of the crease for his third goal of the season.

Sam Anas doubled the Bobcats margin to 2-0 with 6:50 elapsed in the second period, firing a snap shot over Finn’s glove from the middle of the slot for his fourth of the campaign.

Sebastian Weberg sliced the Raiders deficit in half just a little less than five minutes after Anas’ tally, stuffing home a rebound on a shot by sophomore Evan Peterson for his second goal of the season to make it a 2-1 contest.

Tim Harrison tied the game at 2-2 just 26 seconds later, gaining possession of the puck at center ice and converting a breakaway opportunity for his third goal of the season.

“I thought we played well enough to win. Charlie (Finn) made some stops when we needed him to, but so did (Michael) Garteig for them. Even though the shots were a little bit skewed, I thought we had some great looks in the first period.

“The one thing we got to continue to work on is we can’t give pucks away. Anas’ goal was a bad turnover. It was a bad turnover on the game-winning goal as well. Against good teams like that, when you put the puck in a grey area, they’re going to capitalize.”
