Castelton Defeats Cortland; Buffalo’s Hausberger Scores for Cortland

CASTLETON, VT. – The Castleton St. women’s ice hockey team scored three straight goals in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit and went on to defeat Cortland, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in non-conference acction. The Red Dragons fell to 0-2 with the setback, while the Spartans improved to 2-0 for the first time in school history.

Sophomore Chelsea Hausberger (Buffalo/Buffalo Bisons) and freshman Maggie Corbett (Queensbury/Queensbury H.S.) scored Cortland’s goals. Sophomore Abbie Adams (Potsdam/Cornwall Typhoons) and freshmen Madison Fischl (Basking Ridge, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) and Niamh O’Connor (Paramus, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) each recorded assists. Freshman Tessa Muilenburg (Wasilla, AK/Wyoming Seminary) started in goal, allowing two goals and making 19 saves in 30 minutes, 15 seconds. Freshman Deanna Meunier (Parsippany, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) played the final 29:45 and stopped 28 shots while giving up two goals.

Eileen Coyne led the Spartans with two goals. Jade Werger and Nicoline Jensen each had one goal and one assist, Anna Daniels contributed two assists and Danielle Roberts, Samantha McNeil and Samantha Pion chipped in with one assist apiece. Goaltender Paula Stephens made 12 saves.

After a scoreless first period, Corbett gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 3:53 of the second period with her first career goal on a wrist shot. Castleton answered with the game’s next three goals. Werger scored at 5:30. Coyne netted her first on the power play at 9:45 and added her second of the game at 19:42.

In the third period, Hausberger cut the lead to 3-2 at 2:26 with a power-play goal when her slap shot was initially stopped by Stephens but trickled over the goal line. Jensen, however, added an insurance goal at 14:04 to complete the scoring.
