Canberra Church gives up service to serve

The congregation at a growing Canberra church last week ditched its usual service so it could serve. Members of Life City Church, which has just opened a new church at Tuggeranong, handed out food parcels at public housing estates, gave lunches away in the city and around parks for the less fortunate in the community. Guitarist Will Straw (pictured) and other musicians from the church “busked for a cause”, raising money to be used to fight child slavery throughout the world. Life City’s lead pastor Josh Reading said it was an opportunity for the church to get back to basics. “This is what we’re called to do,” he said. “This is now part of a regular thing we do.” The church, which boasts a thriving younger membership, many of whom are international students, has been based out of Civic for two and a half years. In recent months Life City – a church “where life happens” – opened a new church in Barr Smith Avenue, Bonython and was planning on also establishing a Sunday gathering in Belconnen in the near future. “We often find that people come to Canberra for their career,” he said. “But they reach a stage when they start to ask themselves the bigger questions.” Click on www.lifecitychurch.com or  www.facebook.com/lifecitychurch for more information.   MEDIA CONTACT: Ange Reading 0411 968 038 LIFE CITY CHURCH – MAY 6, 2011
