BY RANDY SCHULTZ –

It is amazing what can happen in just 11 days.

When this year’s edition of “The 11-Day Power Play” began on July 5 I treated it as a great event, raising money to help with Cancer Research. But that all changed on the day I walked into HarborCenter in downtown Buffalo.

As I sat in the stands watching two teams play each other on the ice below, my whole thought process had changed. Those two teams were actually skating to raise money for me.

Yes. I have cancer. Melanoma to be specific.

I initially found out on Monday, July 8 at 5:30 p.m. following a phone call to my home from my doctor. I officially found out on Monday, July 29 following a meeting with Dr. Joseph Skitzki at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo.

No, this isn’t a column/blog to promote the fact I have cancer. The prognosis is good thanks to early detection.

Instead, I want to promote three facts for both adults and children:

1 – Listen to your body. If you feel something might be wrong in your body, have it checked out.

2 – Watch your body. If you see something unusual on your body (a lump, change in skin color, etc.) have it checked out.

3 – Don’t take life for granted. Be thankful for what you have.

Life moves on for me. I’m handling this situation head-on. I will keep you updated as we move ahead.

I’m now putting my life into the hands of God and the people at Roswell Park. Team Schultz is ready.

See you at the hockey rink.
