SYRACUSE, NY — The RIT women’s hockey team (3-15-1, 1-5-1 College Hockey America) picked up a point in the College Hockey America standing, rallying from 2-0 down to tie host Syracuse University (4-7-4, 3-2-2 CHA) by a score of 2-2 Friday night at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.

Sophomore Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) potted her fifth and six goals of the season, while classmate Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) made 32 saves. Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic), Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) and Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) added assists. Cornine now has five points (three goals and two assists) in the Tigers’ last two games.

For Syracuse, Allie Munroe and Kelli Roswell scored, while Abbey Miller made 12 saves in net.

Syracuse opened the scoring midway through the first period, as a one-timer in the slot by Munroe found the back of the net, making it 1-0. Just over five minutes later, Roswell made it a two-goal game on a shot from the point. The Orange headed into the first intermission up 2-0.

Neither team scored in the second period, but the Tigers got on the board 5:58 into the third, as Cornine used patience in front of the net after a turnover and tallied RIT’s first goal of the night. Thurston had the lone assist on the play. The Tigers defense and goaltending then stood tall, killing off three penalties following Cornine’s goal, including a 5-on-3 power-play for the Orange. The Tigers then had their own chance on the power-play, and they converted. RIT tied the game on Cornine’s second goal of the night, which was roofed from a tight angle by the goal line with just under four minutes left.

Neither team could score in overtime, but there were opportunities on both sides in the extra period. Both de Jonge and Miller made a pair of saves in overtime.

RIT was 1-for-7 on the power-play, while the Tigers killed off all six of Syracuse’s chances on the man advantage.

The Tigers and Orange will head back to Rochester for game two Saturday at the Gene Polisseni Center. Puck drop is set for 2:05 p.m., and there will be video and live stats. The game can also be seen on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel 98.
